5 hours in our hilly metro park 6.5 mile loop yesterday... quite slow for me, but I'm building, so I'm good with it. I had no positional issues, legs felt decent and ... wait for it...I had a breakthrough! I PEED ON MY BIKE! A personal quest for over the last 5 years!!! It was raining, there was a downhill, I had to go and I figured I'd try...again. SUCCESS! Gross, but I was smiling ear to ear lol! The brick was hilly as always, but I think my local runs have helped in that department.
Today, a different metro park with less elevation and some really nice recently paved sections that used to rattle my brain. Pushed much better than I expected to. A big family dinner and tomorrow my rig gets her once over for camp. Getting excited and looking forward to the miles, but not the disgusting gatorade!
Well that was a hard weekend of training. It all started with a really tough, hot long run on Thursday that really took a lot out of me. I'm not sure I have recovered from it yet. Friday I followed up with a really good 4000y swim with a 3500y set that was right on pace. Saturday was one of the hardest bikes I've ever done. The wind was really strong (about 20knots) and was on the nose for about 50% of the ride. I was really really drained and mentally spent. There was a heat advisory and I had been sucked dry by the heat and humidity. I couldn't bring myself to run afterwards. I did get 5 hrs of moving time in and am happy that I at least didn't quit even though I wanted to. Sunday's ride wasn't a whole lot better although I do think I was better mentally. The 3 hrs still hurt pretty bad but I got it done and nailed a 1 hr run afterwards. (By nailed, I mean I stayed on my HR targets for 6 straight miles off the bike). I was pretty happy with the run as I did not walk except to take a drink after each lap.
All in all the last few days of training have been really tough. I have had a few weekends in a row where I felt really strong on the bike. This was not one of them. I was hoping for a confidence boost heading into camp this week but this weekend had a bit of the opposite effect. I'm going to try and take it a little easier in my workouts this week to get rid of some of the residual fatigue and will be ready to nail the workouts in Chattanooga starting on Friday.
No travel last week so managed the full schedule. The down side, training in Shanghai in the summer heat. Last weeks temperatures peeked 100 every day, with a the feel like temps of 110 plus!!.
Long run was a melt down, started at 4:45am to beat the heat, not so much. When the sun peaked out the temperature skyrocketed to the high 90's.. I consumed all 40oz of fluid in my Camelback by mile nine. Stopped at two stores and finished off two regular cokes to get me back to my apartment. 13 slow miles complete. I will try again this week.
Long ride Saturday was done on a rural island about an hour from city center. Huge wind and heat as the Typhoon was getting closer. 240oz of fluids, 3 bonk bars, 6 gels and I will call it a successful ride. Sunday i stayed on the rainer for my ABP ride.
Last week by the numbers:
Swim-10,200 yards Bike-164 miles Run - 31 miles Total TSS of 1187
All my workouts are posted on Strava:

Train hard, the race will separate the pretenders.
