Flying to race with Wheelcover

Newb to the whole flying to a race thing. Was going to ship my bike with Tribike Transport with Aerojacket installed but saw this post on ST and decided against it. Now I have to figure out how to get it to Canada (IMMT). It's kind of a bulky box. (24x24x3)  Should I try to carry it on? Check Bag? Coach Rich suggest I ship to venue but international shipping is $35-$55 one way.

Any ideas?

  • Alvin...limited experience myself traveling with bike.  But, just did IMC and shipped mine with TBT with disc cover.  No issues.  N = 1.  I suspect that ST thread deal is rare.  That said, if it's you, that WOULD suck....

  • Just flew to Austria with bike. Used Armored Hen House for bike and their wheel bag with the disc cover attached with cardboard cut outs between the wheels and on the outsides. Checked the bike both times. On the way there, carried the wheel bag to the gate and checked it there--no extra charge. Leaving Rome, tried to take wheel bag through security and their equivalent of the TSA would not let it go through the scanner and refused to open it to inspect it. Made me take it back to the counter to check it. The very nice woman who had just checked my bike, walked me over to the oversized bag security check-in point and it made it on the plane--without charge. No damage!
  • Alvin, I've packed the wheel cover in my checked bags before (twice). Full bag (big one) and it bent slightly to follow the sides of the luggage around clothing. That was for races in 2012 and 2013. I'm still using the same cover today (no issues).

    YMMV.
  • I would not worry about it. Bike is trucked. Many times with wheelcover on tribike transport with no problems.

Or put cover in luggage and install at race.
  • I've used TBT 6 times and my bike case many times more, without incident either way, but when I've taken the disc cover I've packed those separately in my check-in luggage and installed them at the race. I'm using TBT for IM Louisville since they owe me a free transport they offer to repeat customers.
  • I've used TBT countless times, but never shipped WITH the disc cover on the rear. I usually take a piece of twine and wrap both sides of the disc cover together, carry them on, and put in an overhead storage. Then when I get to my destination, I put the wheel covers on.

I've never been harassed by anyone (TSA, airlines, no extra fees, etc) for this.
  • Thanks all for the detail, as I'm using TBT to get my bike to IMWI so am interested in this as well. Also, as a reminder, if you're planning to install the wheelcovers at the race you'll need to plan to remove the cassette = bring tools.
  • I have shipped my bike with the wheelcover on twice, and nothing has happened to it.
