Aaronson micro - really messed up week - help

I've been at this long enough to do my own workout re-arranging but this week is tricky and I need some advice. I'm in week 15/20 towards IMWI.

Last weekend was IMWI camp. 3 rides Thurs-Sat totaling 290 miles, then long run Sunday 12.5mi

Monday totally OFF, 100% recovery

Tuesday and Wednesday both days I ran 60' in the morning and swam 4300 yd in the afternoon. The Tuesday run was 4x1mi LT, ran full strength and felt totally recovered. Wednesday likewise was stronger than MP for the hour. The swims were fine. Fully recovered from IMWI camp.

Then today (Thurs) and tomorrow (Fri) I am prevented from any workouts due to a business trip that is so busy I can't even get in a run. By the time I get home tomorrow it will be 8pm so if I head to the pool I'll need a divorce attorney.

SO, THE PROBLEM...by now haven't been on the bike since last Saturday AND no long run this week.

OPTIONS GOING THROUGH MY HEAD...

1. Bike 5h / 3.5h on Sat / Sun, respectively. Try to get in one weekend run (60' is best-case) and one swim.

2. Bike 5h on Sat and do the long run on Sunday. Try to get in one swim Saturday afternoon.

One other thing to keep in mind is that I will be having one final "big bike block" starting next Saturday (Aug 15) where I'll target 5 rides in 6 days totaling 400+ miles while on vacation in Michigan. So maybe that makes it ok to be a bit behind on the bike this week and makes option #2 more attractive.

Thoughts? Other options?

  • You got in massive biking last weekend. I would actually consider doing the long run Saturday on rest legs and then do the long bike on Sunday. Only having One long bike this week won't hurt you given camp weekend last week and another big bike week on your calendar.
  • Thanks Jeremy. I am heavily leaning to bike/run not bike/bike so in the absence of other input that's what I'll do. I would consider run/bike but my track record of biking the day after a long run is that the bike is usually not as good quality. And I'd rather run on less-than-fresh legs since P is suggesting I restrain my pace in any case!
  • Let me know how it goes. I did my long run today on fresh legs and am doing 5hr bike about 12 hours later. Will see how it affects the bike tomorrow. The normal IM plan has two days between the long run and long bike so this may not be enough recovery time but after all the mileage last week I was ok risking a less than optimal long bike die to other scheduling constraints this week.
  • 1) Every once in a while such an edit is okay, not permanently.

    2) As JB noted, you did LOT of work last week and as you notes, you WILL DO lots of work in a few weeks while on vacation. I am not worried about you building MORE fitness, but rather keeping you on the trajectory of healthy / married / employed and ready to race. image

    Good luck this weekend!
