Strava sync - few questions

Hello...I posted a question on dashboard but decided to move here for more help....

Am new to Strava and having two problems:

1) when doing indoor training rides, my miles do not feed through...only time. I have a Quark PM with Garmin 810. I checked the ANT sensors and they are working fine. I did a 1 mile test and saved it....transferred to Strava just perfect. I then did a 2 hour trainer road session and again, none of the miles fed over. Garmin connect shows everything correct...so guessing Strava is "looking" somewhere else?

2) indoor treadmill...I have a footpod and garmin 920xt. Again on watch and garmin connect all stats fine. Strava however is taking total elapsed time (I auto pause for stops). how do i get it to record only moving time?

Appreciate help.

Thanks!

  • To get distance for the bike, you need to have a speed cadence sensor. Your Quarq is capturing cadence, but not the rotation of the wheel. To get distance, you need a feed to your head unit that captures wheel rotation. The expectation to this is a trainer like the Wahoo Kickr, which calculates distance because it replaces the rear wheel.

Is the foot pod giving the Garmin distance? When you look at the history on the 920 does it capture distance?

Another question - Does Garmin connect show distance on the run?
  • Hi Dino, I do have a speed/distance sensor. When I did my 1 mile test ride without trainer road, the stats came through on Stava just fine. On the 920 yes...watch gave me miles as well can be seen on connect. The miles actually transfer over ok from the run...it just that Strava is taking total elapsed time instead of moving time...ie, when the watch stops/auto pause....Strava doesn't see that. As example I did 3.5 miles on TM today in 30 minutes...watch records this for correct pace. Strava shows I did 40 minutes (I had several stops due to life in the background) for those same miles.
  • Glad to here the bike worked.

Regarding your treadmill run, Strava is always going to take total time including pauses. This is because at the core, Strava tracks PR's and KOM's. The logic is that if a person sprints, rests, sprints, rest over, over and over, they could cover a distance in 25 minutes moving but with 40 minutes total time. Then, say a person comes along and does the same distance in 30 minutes without resting. Who should get the KOM? Starve would give it to the person who did it in 30 minutes total time versus the person it in 40 minutes (only 25 minutes moving).

    Make sense?
  • Dino, thanks for the info on run...makes complete sense!

On bike...it's not working when I use trainer road. If I just do my own spin, it's ok...but not using any of the workouts on TR.

    Any ideas on that?

  • Not sure about TR. I have only used it once many years ago. I am lucky enough to be able to ride outside year round.
  • Now Dino you are making me feel bad! Living in Ohio we are just not that lucky....think I need to consider a relocation. ;-)
  • You have to add the garmin speed sensor under devices in TR if you want speed/distance just like any other sensor like the PM or HR.

  • Hello Attilla, thanks for helping (again)! Let me have a look tonight and see if I can find it and add. Hope I can finally figure this one out. ;-)
  • Attila, thanks for all the help! I double checked and although I thought the distance sensor was paired, it was not. Appreciate the guidance!
