rotor in power and Garmin 920 won't talk

I switched to a Rotor Inpower powermeter b/c I wanted wheel flexibility, rode rotor cranks and q-rings already and wanted to keep my rotor MAS spider.

But I can't get my garmin 920 to pair with it. I connected with my 510 that for some reason I still have (it never gets used) and everything seems to be working properly but the 920 just won't find it.

Emailed with Garmin. Got no where really. Unpair everything. Turn off bluetooth. No dice.

Has anyone else had this problem w the 920? If so, did you find a solution?

  • I assume you are on the latest firmware on both devices. Can you try manually entering the sensor ID into the 920 instead of using the search function to see if that gives you a different result? I've seen some issues with the 920 and the stages and it seems to be related to the firmware on the 920.  I would also try removing all of your other sensors from the pool restarting and adding the rotor back first to see if that works then layer back your other sensors, just a guess.

    Good luck.

  • Attila - do you know how to manually enter the sensor id into the 920? I couldnt figure out how to do that. the manual entry worked to pair it with my 510.
I tried the other suggestions but no dice.
  • It looks like they took that feature out, really annoying. Are you doing a search all or going into the power sub-section and searching from there? I would also get the 920 right next to the power meter, maybe it's a signal interference thing who knows and check the batteries in the rotor and maybe try a brand new one. Maybe the edge tolerates a lower signal voltage coming out of the PM than the 920, again just guessing. I'd bang on Garmin a little harder as well and maybe reach out to Rotor too. For such an expensive device you should expect more.
  • I spoke again to rotor. They at least seem to by trying to help. I was given a few things to try and a "Dont worry. We will figure this out". Which makes sense. Because if we cant it is going back and it will become a power2max...
  • haha! turns out the in power wasn't pairing with the 510 after all. the 510 was picking up the power tap.
I'm giving up on the rotor and will try power2max.
  • Ouch.... That's bummer when your proof point, "it works with other units", turns out to be false.

I bought the ANT+ Dongle from Wahoo Fitness for iPhone. It's a great investment for ANT+ gadget trouble shooting. You can use your iPhone in concert with the dongle and the Wahoo app to check single strength and function. When ever a head unit seems to be "not working" the first thing I grab is the dongle. It's great to have in your tool box.

If you have a newer iPhone you will also need the adapter for the smaller input on the phone.
  • done dino. great idea.
In the mean time, rotor returned and power2max ordered.
  • Warning on the 920... (and the 910)... I've been struggling for a couple weeks getting power readings on the 910 from the Stages PM. Finally figured it out that it's related to the angle of the watch when on my wrist in the aerobars. With a new aerobottle setup with the computer holder sticking out in front of the BTA bottle and the watch on the mount (so parallel to the ground), it works fine. So, it's not the distance from watch to power meter, but the angle. I just got the 920 today and tested it too, both on the wrist and on the mount. Got the same result, although better on the wrist (intermittently dropping watts, vs. all 0's on the 910.) Either way, I'm getting a computer for the mount; 910 or 920 on mount is not a race day solution, and I can see the computer better anyhow on the mount. Good luck!
