Because it makes sense to go to Mumbai 2 wks before IMWI...

So.

Gainful employment is intruding into my training schedule - I have to fly to India Aug 28-Sept 4 - right at the end of wk 18 / start of wk 19. Luckily most of that time will be in taper, but hoping to get some feedback on how to minimize the interruption in training:

- Since I've been limiting runs to 1:45-2hrs after IMLP, I'm thinking I can pull the final race rehearsal forward to Thursday 27, get the long run in when I land on Sat.  Is this a good idea?

- I'm going to try to get in as many workouts during the week as I can.  Given the air pollution + traffic + insane heat, I expect it will be the hotel gym 'mills and spin bikes (yay for me).  Swims may be challenging since I'm not sure what the pool situation will be.  If I can't get the swims in, what is the best way to replace the activity (run, bike, or... rest?)

- Also hoping for any tips for a 20+ hr flight each way (yoga in the aisles?).

Thanks in advance,

Evan

  • Yes, it does and you should enjoy the experience. Stretch in the aisles every opportunity and be sure to wear compression socks on the flights. Running is probably your best bet for staying on schedule...spin bike if available. Take stretch cords for swimming.
  • Ditto on the compression socks. Enjoy and be safe
  • It's taper time...so yes to long ride before...ideally Sat long ride, Sun long run, then travel...when on the road just be active every day for like 45'...I don't care the mode, just burn calories baby and stay sane. You JUST DID AN IRONMAN, NO KEY WORKOUTS HERE!

x2 what paul said!!!! Plus compression!
  • I was in India for work in June and attempted to swim in the hotel pools. It was only attempt because the outside pool water temp in Delhi had to have been 90 degrees at 7am. When I turned to breathe all I could smell was the burning trash from the nearby slum. Not sure what the temps are in Mumbai now but be careful of overheating. Stick to the nice hotel a/c fitness rooms. Eat/drink carefully too. I had no issues of Delhi belly thank goodness but drank more bottled water and coke/pepsi than I have in the past 5 years and stayed away from any/all street food.
  • Thanks all - appreciate the advice!
  • Don't know where you're staying in Mumbai (it's a big place) but the new JW Marriott near the International Terminal has a 25 yard pool (by my pacing measurement). Gym and mills are nice are as well.
  • Dave - as it happens, that's where I'm staying - relieved to hear the facilities live up to the pictures on the site...
  • Small world! I was just there last week. This hotel was just opened in March of this year so really in good shape. I travel in India 4 or 5 times a year for the last 10 years--let me know if I can make any other suggestions. Have fun!

    Best,

    Dave

  • Only inside Endurance Nation could you two meet each other. Next step...picture of you both poolside in Mumbai!
