Struggling with Powertap

Getting to be VERY FRUSTRATING!!  Just got this new Powertap everyone is talking about and I can't get it to do some things.

Under Computer Setup 5

Trying to get the computer to LEArn the the cadence and speed.  I got it to learn the HUB ID and the HR no problem.  Now when I continue on to SPd Id I go past the zeroes until LEArn is displayed then I hold select until LEArn flashes, spin the wheel wait for about  3-5 minutes nothing ever happens, I give up there and go to Cd Id, do same as before, get the LEArn to flash spin the crank wait 3-5 minutes and give up.

I've done this now about 1 million times, about ready to send this back tell them what I really think of it.  Did I forget something in the instructions here because I've looked through it several times to see what I may have missed?

Anyways I go out and ride with it and I have the watts at the top and then cadence in the middle and time at the bottom.  watts and time ok but cadence gives me numbers like 4-9, but at the bottom of the computer on the left of time there is the letter T and C.  T is solid but the C flashes, any ideas here?

  • Is this a wired or wireless PT? And, well this is going to sound like a silly question but, did you buy a seperate cadence sensor pickup?

I have a wireless PT and I don't bother with a seperate cadense or speed sensors. I just set it to use the "internal hub" or whatever it's called to guestimate the cadence and that works just fine.
  • Just got it wednesday the PowerTap Pro+ wireless with computer through EN.

Nope, didn't buy separate sensor or anything like that.  And I just double checked, I also have it set to just the hub.  Did you get yours to to give you numbers when you did the Computer Setup to have it LEArn spd and cd?

I also just checked it out and it gives me the correct speed when riding it.

  • I suggest not battling these issues on your own or via the forum and instead give Saris a call in the am and they will gladly walk you through the process. The first time through is definitely not intuitive and I find the pleasant people at Saris always ready and willing to help.
  • That is what I will do first thing in the morning. Sure hope I don't have to send it in for them to look at it!
  • Rich- I frankly don't remember setting it the LEARN the spd or cadence. The only thing I had it LEARN was the Hub ID. Of course, I could be remembering that wrong. I second Al's recommendation- call Saris on Monday. Their customer service is excellent.
  • What Nemo said.

  • "Speed" and "Cadence" are for separate speed and cadence sensors. Since you don't have those (that data is coming from your hub), the PT computer will not be able to LEARN their device ID's. As long as it has learned your hub ID and heartrate monitor ID, you're good to go - don't bother with the other two.
  • x2 on what Nemo said. I also have the Pro+ model. I didn't even have to get it to Learn the Hub when it was new. It just detected it out of the box. I did have to go through that process whn I changed the batteries though. Once again, only Learned the Hub and speed and cadence work just fine.

  • OK, I called Saris and you are right about Customer Support FANTASTIC!! There is no problems with my Powertap, the problem was me (I feel stupid). Kevin you are correct, seeing how I do not have the separate sensor for speed and cadence there is nothing for it to LEArn other than just the HUB.
So anyways when I was talking to Support he had me get on the buke and pedal. The same numbers came up as before but the thing I didn't realize was the small number next to the large number was part of the cadence as well. I was getting the right cadence just didn't look right to me. I was expecting it to look like my cateye, both numbers being big.

Thanks everyone for the help, Greatly Appreciated!!!

  • Thanks for the follow up enjoy your PT.
  • Yeah, that cadence display takes some getting used to.
  • OK, you've had the power meter for a day or two. What are your max watts numbers? Are your legs toast trying to get some huge numbers? Gotta have fun with it before you really learn how to use it!
  • I haven't really had much of a chance to get it outside yet. I will tomorow or this weekend though. Then I will probable see what I got! I had a computrainer before I got this so I really played with it.
  • Good idea Rich. Just play with it for a while. Ride around, train based on whatever you were using before- and just observe. You'll learn a lot in those first few rides by just sorta observing what happens and not trying to force yourself into training with the PM on day one.
  • The area I'm really interested in, is when I get into the hills. How I go up and down. Going up I'm sure will really be an eye opener, cause before I would always go way to hard up a hill in a race then coast part of the way on the downhill side before I would recover. I'm sure this will be the hardest part of training with a PM, how to hold yourself back when going uphill. Can't wait!!!
