HIM RR#3 Advice please.

Here's how it lays out. Did my RR1 and bonked hard. Improved nutrition. Missed RR#2 due to Moms emergency surgery. Now I have RR#3 tomorrow. Here's the problems;

Problem#1- It's supposed to rain tonight and tomorrow. It's the first rain since May. I am REALLY concerned about road conditions and it being very slick. I crashed last year right after a big rain. Is it PC to due the bike on the trainer? I know it's not ideal but I am trying to test nutrition. I have the distance and pace down cold.

Problem #2- The air quality here is terrible due to two large wild fires. I am very sensitive to smoke and develop bronchitus easily. I have been running on the treadmill indoors because of the air quality. Can I do the run on the treadmill? Again testing nutrition and hydration. My HIM is projected to be very hot. It was 102 last year.

Thank you everyone. I really appreciate your guidance.

  • Safety is a huge priority. If you don't feel safe or comfortable riding tomorrow it probably won't be a good race rehearsal. I would say yes, it's definitely ok to do it on the trainer as a result. Ideally we all do these things outside in race like conditions, however, everyone has different circumstances and environmental conditions so we do what we can. Every year there's several people on the team who do RR's on the trainer.  Most people including myself do not enjoy riding in the rain. Hopefully you have an idea of how long the ride will take on race day. I forget what the HIM RR guidance is, but I would guess that it is advised that you don't ride for more than 3 hours, which is good advice for the trainer in most conditions anyways.

    Again I would say yes, it's ok to run inside on the TM. You don't want to be laid up for several days because you were breathing in a forest fire!

    For both parts of your RR I would just try to do things as closely as possible as you plan on race day, including pacing, nutrition, etc. One of the benefits to doing it inside is you may have the ability to cut down that transition time most of us have outside and make it closer to race conditions. Have fun and let us know how it goes!
  • Thank you Doug!

    I don't look forward to a 3 hour trainer ride. I really can't afford to be injured or sick right now. To much on my shoulders. I hope the rain clears some of the smoke. I don't mind running in the rain. It would be a nice change.

  • 2X what Doug says. Remember that the trainer will be harder than doing it outside become you won't have the small rests that you would going downhill. Also it will be a great mental challenge. Good luck.

    My wife and I are in Penticton and it's smokey here too. Our iron distance race is Sunday but hopefully the front that's going through tomorrow will clear things out a bit.
  • Agreed. Indoors kind of sucks, but it's better than rubber side up or getting sick.
