Garmin 520 vs 810

I bought a Garmin 810 right before the 520 came out.  Now the GPS/satellite locator on the 810 has crapped out.  I'm gonna return the 810.  Should I stick with a new 810 or try the 520?  I'm curious to hear from those of you with the 520.

  • IMO. It comes down to "how often will I ride unfamiliar routes where I will want a mapping guide?" Everything else is the same and after much research, I've been happy,w/ 520.
  • I've had the 500 for years and finally updated to 520 and love it. It's got a ton of features no touch screen which I like and most important, it's still smallish. For me the size was the biggest driver I just don't like big bike computers. The 520 being slightly larger than the edge barely clears my front mount bottle on tri bars so it still works but 510, 810, 1000 would never work.

Feature set is great, satellite pickup is fast and screen is easier to read then the 500 so winner all around for me.
  • I've been using the 520 for 2 weeks now and I really like it. The live track and text/call notification were the two features that most interested me. The smartphone based upload to connect is convenient if you always pair with a smartphone and inconvenient if you don't. There are a lot of buttons, but the button pattern is pretty similar to the 910xt, so it was familiar enough to me that it's not an issue.
  • Good to know!  My 500 is really old and just this month I am only getting about 7 hours on the battery life.  I need a new one before IM Louisville.

  • For those using the new garmin 520 with a garmin HR run strap there is an issue with the signal constantly dropping out.

I found this looking around when I noticed mine kept going to 63 beats hundreds of times during a ride.

I opened a ticket with Garmin and they confirmed the issue and are trying to do a software update to resolve it. So if you are using this combo don't waste time trying to figure it out.
