Guess Coach Rich vs JW's Bike Splits - Free T-shirt to the winner!
This one is simple. Put your guess in this thread for how much you think Coach Rich will beat JW on the bike split at IMWI.
As a reminder, Coach Rich is a Multi-KQ skinny dude in the best bike shape of his life riding his ultralight tweaked out P3 with new cockpit, Di2, and all the Aero-Wizzbangedry money can buy. He also claims to know every turn on the Wisconsin course and in fact has taught seminars on it... I have taken a minimalist training approach this year, am ~12lbs heavier than last yr and will be riding my massive Fat Bike in a completely upright position. I have never even been to Madison, WI let alone ridden the course... Learn more about my training this yr HERE and my Challenge to YOU to raise money for ReserveAid HERE.
Closest to the pin (over or under) in picking how much faster Coach Rich's bike split is to mine gets the following ReserveAid package mailed to them at my expense:
ReserveAid T-shirt (I will get as close as I can on the sizing, but options are limited), ReserveAid Cow-Bell, ReserveAid Temporary Tatoos and a couple ReserveAid bike stickers. It is a 100% guarantee that if you put the ReserveAid sticker on your bike you WILL be faster. I'll also throw in an EN bike sticker!
Comments
I will throw my hat in the ring. My guess is he beats you by 1:20
EDIT:: $50 to RA if you go faster than 1;28 behind Coach
Wanna do a side bet (or two) then?
$100 to the charity of your choice if he beats my bike split by 2:00:00 or more, $100 to ReserveAid by you if he doesn't.
AND/OR
$100 to the charity of your choice if YOU beat my bike split by 1:40:00 or more, $100 to ReserveAid by you if you don't.
1:33. Rich goes 4:57, you go 6:30. That second loop is dreadful on a tri bike; I can't imagine how badly Sauk + Midland will suck on a FB the second time around. And I'll be more than curious to see what the effort does to your run. In fact, so curious . . . if you finish the first lap of the run before Rich, Matt, Peter or Jeremy finish, another $100 to RA. Any one of those four laps you, no dough.
Greetings from seat 34C, LAX to ORD in route to MSN...
152.5lb on the scale today, putting me at about 4.3w/kg. I'm riding Dino's P5, with 808 front, wheelcover, LG P-09 helmet, the one-piece suit that Jeremy hooked up, Ceramic Speed chain, Vittoria Open Corsa tires, latex tubes, View Speed aero skewers, one bottle BTA, 2 rear cages but with the cooler forecasted temps I may take those off. 400cal/hr, 600mg sodium per hour, getting my beets on all week (nasty!) and about 200-400mg of caffeine on the bike.
BestBikeSplit is modeling about 5:02-07 depending on the watts I dial in, I guess. Race rehearsals on unclosed courses have been 4:52-56. I know the course very well and make a point out of scaring the crap out of the volunteers manning the corners
Coach goes 4:55:20 and JW does not break 16 mph, like 7:03:30...sorry, Ian, 2:07:15.
We need to keep John honest, and give him a haircut, say 3 minutes added to his bike split for every minute he walks outside of aid stations. Mandatory post race Garmin file review.
Under no circumstances...other than a massive tailwind coming back to town...will I go 4:55. In fact, I've definitely have a "good enough" average mph in my head and that I ain't goin' faster than that.
You guys in the peanut gallery need to do some research on IMWI bike splits
(So now we gotta watch mph along with HR, power, fluid I&O?. I'll need someone in a sidecar to keep track of all that for me, given my current rate of memory loss.)
I've ridden that course with you (or rather, following WAY behind you) and I cannot imagine you wouldn't go sub-5. Whether it's 4:55 or 4:57 or 4:52 or whatever I don't know. But I strongly suspect it begins with a 4 unless you are unlucky and have a flat or mechanical.
Btw the current forecast is for a tailwind back into town. Under 10mph however.
My math...
Coach Rich- 5:03- He has race IMWI 3 times to the best of my internet knowledge and the splits are 5:12-5:14.... I know he can ride it under 5 but maybe he shouldnt? I do not know the course, his previous fitness/w/kg vs. current #'s, but past performance is the best indicator of future performance... I gave him a 5 min edge for fitness and another 5 min for gear (that is still huge over past performances).... I also know he wants to go sub-10 and the way to get sub-10 is with a sub4hr Marathon NOT a sub 5hr bike... He is also older (maybe smarter?)....
JW- 6:55- I simply took his HIM bike split of 3:12:30 , doubled it to get 6:15 , added 40 min for the added distance and hills !
I'm also with MR being more interested to see how the run shakes out for both these guys.... Don't be that guy !
1:48
Thanks to all for doing the thinking for me.
JW, size L, please. Medium means 'working'. I like Large T's for my casual fit. No rush, I know you're busy.
Rich 5:06 -- John Boy 6:53 -- Difference 1:47:00. $50 contribution to RA even if somehow I am wrong. Size M
Since Withrow is betting on a 6:15, I'm puttin him on 6:16:01 which will allow for Rich to put it in cruise control for a 5:05
Rich rides smarter than any of us would and still gets top AG spot for the time.
John rolls like Beast on his 'that's cute' bike to a final bike split that the majority of the field would take in a heart beat.
Awesome job by both you guys, Keep it up and knock that run out.
