Wheel Cover Snafu for IMChoo...

Long story short, the power meter in my tri bike crapped out so I took the one from my road bike and put it on the tri bike. Problem solved. Or so I thought. The wheel cover doesn't fit, I'm guessing cuz there must be some difference in the wheel itself or in the pm hub (prior was sl+ and the newer one is whatever the newest powertap is.

Question: Assuming it is even possible, do I try to rush a new wheel cover and have one of the shops at ImChoo install it or skip it? I'm torn. Wheel cover is free speed but the added stress/admin of getting it fast then installed, plus the "nothing new on race day" thing.... Thoughts?

  • Sounds to me like that would be a stressful event for you. If so, I say you let it go.
  • Kim, if you can get the wheel cover in time for the race, I would. As to "nothing new on race day" - wheel covers are pretty binary, they either fit and work or they don't fit (and hence don't work). So it's not really like it's something 'new' to figure out. There is not a 'skill' to master with it. You either go faster or you don't. As long as you have time to install it and take it for a test ride to ensure it fits, you are good.

As to installation - believe me when I say this, they are absolutely simple to install yourself, all you need is to be able to take off your wheel from your bike and use a chain whip / nut wrench to remove the cassette from the wheel. That's all.

If you have a PowerTap hub, it's even easier. Just put something that fits snugly into the hole where the quick release fits (cassette side), and pull out. The little cap comes off, and the cassette can then be removed en bloc, as a unit, which does not come apart. Put the wheel cover on, put the cassette back on, and pop the little cap firmly into place. I use one of those rubber things which covers the QR hole when wheels are shipped. Works perfectly, I do this 10 times a year whenever transporting my bike. No chain whip, no wrenches, as easy as brushing my teeth. Just be observant for any small cylindrical pieces which cover the axle coming off at the same time - they fit back onto the axle no problem.

  • Kim, if you can get it in time for Choo and want to order it, I can install it for you. Let me know.
  • I ordered and will have it shipped direct to Choo. Doug- I may take you up on that! I'll touch base w u in Choo, thanks! Def don't want to attempt anything beyond pumping the tires as overall stress level will be high!
