Sunglasses for the very blind

I am very blind- -14 diopters with astigmatisms and cannot wear contacts due to retinal detachments.  Up til this point, I've just biked and run with an old pair of glasses that are pretty tough and I don't mind getting beat up.  But I wanted to go the more elegant route and got me some Rudy Stratofly's.  I had multiple conversations with different Rudy people who assured me that the prescription clip would work for any prescription, but they couldn't make them themselves for me that strong.  So I spent $400 at my optician where they used all the thinning tricks in the book.  Unfortunately I picked the lenses up on Friday and I'm very disappointed- with the thickness of the lenses, the glasses can't fit as intended without squishing my eyelashes and being very uncomfortable.  I'm also seeing that my vision is not great, assuming due to the curve of the lenses when pressed into the shape of the glasses, and being closer to my eyes than normal glasses.  What solutions do really blind people have???

  • All I can offer is empathy. I thought my eyes were bad @ -8/8.5. without correction, I can basically see 2-4" in front of my face; everything else is a myopic blur. While I am able to use contacts, I Have cycled a fair amount (though not in races) using a sturdy pair of transitions glasses - the kind that are photosensitive and darken in the sun. And I OFTEN do the IM run in a similar (photosensitive), lighter pair, with wire frames.
  • Wow, -14, that's intense! I'm -7.5 and thought that was bad. Send a PM to Professor Jenks...I think he runs in glasses a lot and has prescription everything.
