Infinit formulation and Sodium

I was just reading the nutrition webinar.  It's suggested that the sodium intake be 500-1000 mg/hr on race day.  Do people use infinit with that much sodium per hour.   Is it  a problem in a 3 hour concentrated bottle?

thanks

  • It's hard to have more than 600mg of sodium in 28 oz without making the solution hypertonic and taste salty. So I put in as much sodium into the Infinit as possible, turn the flavor down quite low...and my 3 hour concentrated bottle tastes sweet and a bit salty---like an Umeboshi plum which I like.
So I carry S!caps which I take to increase my hourly sodium intake.

    Hope that makes sense.
  • I dowhat Kit does, S! Caps too. Those caps have saved many a day.

  • How do you guys carry all this fluid on the bike??? I have a 40 oz Speedfil...and I'm stumped. I tried a concentrated Infinit bottle once and the saltiness had me guzzling water like nobody's business. The weather has been cool enough that I haven't been drinking that much and in hot weather I have the option of stopping at the convenience store at the 1 and 2 hour marks for water refills but I don't love that solution.

Here's what I do for races and race rehearsals: aerodrink on the aerobars for water and 28 oz water bottle on the down tube filled with 6 scoops of Infinit (3 hours of Calories) and water. For races, I leave the aerodrink empty as I'm not eating or drinking for the first 30 minutes of the ride. I'll pick up water at the first aid station and fill the aerodrink. I take a sip of my concentrated Infinite and then a gulp of water. I've gone so far as to measure my "sip" (it's 2-3 oz) and my "gulp" (it's 6-7 oz) to make sure I'm drinking enough water to dilute the concentrated Infinite. When in doubt, drink more water as taking in a hypertonic solution can give you GI upset.

For a race rehearsal or training ride, I'll fill the aerodrink with water and refill at the car (riding a loop) or convenience stores.

Lastly, I gulp water after taking the salt tablets. Water---not Gatorade or Infinit. Again, don't want a concentrated solution in my stomach which can slow down gastric emptying.

FWIW, my sodium intake on a warm day is >900mg/hour. On a cool day, I'm good with 600mg/hour. I know these numbers from the sheer pain of trial and error.

  • thanks, kit - I had the same Q as I was reading the thread... I may have to give that a try on my next long ride. I've got the dual chamber aquacell so what I did for the first RR was fill the big chamber with water, the little with infinit (about 2/3 of 1 serving) and had 2 extra bottles of infinit behind my seat. That way I had my nutrition and I knew I could stop to get more water as necessary...
