Hello Coach Rich!

I just submitted my (possible) 2016 Race Schedule for you to look at. I realize this schedule is pretty intensive, and wanted to get your input on a couple of the races I submitted for review. In September 2016, my hometown will be hosting the ITU World Long Course Championship race (in OKC), which is scheduled about 2 weeks from my first Ironman race (IM Louisville). I planned to race this World Championship as a 'big day' type scenario, in preparation for IMLOU. Do you think this is a good idea? I am concerned with how close this would fall to Louisville and might break into my taper time, etc.

Additionally, when should I begin my OutSeason training? I just finished my last race of the season last weekend (RedMan 70.3). I have committed to racing a 200 mile relay race with a group of friends 10/9-10/10 just for fun, and was thinking I should start my OutSeason after that race... or possibly the last weekend of October as the OutSeason guide seems to suggest. If I start the OutSeason at the end of October, should I just focus on core work and light running/biking in the meantime?

One last question, I am open to a couple options for a 70.3 in 2016, either IM Boulder 70.3 (6/11/2016) or IM Racine 70.3 (7/17/2016). Would you suggest one over the other, either in terms of timing or difficulty in my preparation for IMLOU or Long Course Worlds?

Would you recommend I add an early season 70.3, such as New Orleans or Galveston to the plan to get an earlier start on the season? My goals this year are 1- to complete my first full IM and 2- to finish a HIM sub 5:00.

Thank you!

Josh

  • Hey Josh,

I did your TSR yesterday but only saw this thread today. Please look at the TSR I did for you and let me know what items from your post above you still need clarification on. Thanks!
  • Hi Coach Rich,

Thank you for my TSR. I am looking forward to getting started soon! I have a couple questions for clarification:
    - Per the timing of IM Louisville, would you recommend I race IM Boulder 70.3 (6/11/2016) or IM Racine (7/17/2016)? Would you recommend one over the other in terms of difficulty?
    - Would you recommend I add an early season 70.3, such as New Orleans or Galveston to the plan to get an earlier start on the season?
    - I have to register for the Long Course Worlds in a few months to either confirm I will be attending (or deny so my slot can roll down). This is a week or two before my A-Race (IM Louisville). Do you think it would be a good idea to do this race so close to IM Louisville?

Thank you so much for your time!

    Hi Coach Rich,

Thank you for my TSR. I am looking forward to getting started soon! I have a couple questions for clarification:

    - Per the timing of IM Louisville, would you recommend I race IM Boulder 70.3 (6/11/2016) or IM Racine (7/17/2016)? Would you recommend one over the other in terms of difficulty? The timing of either event is fine so just pick the one you'd like to do.

    - Would you recommend I add an early season 70.3, such as New Orleans or Galveston to the plan to get an earlier start on the season? Again, that's up to you and a function of budget, travel, etc.

    - I have to register for the Long Course Worlds in a few months to either confirm I will be attending (or deny so my slot can roll down). This is a week or two before my A-Race (IM Louisville). Do you think it would be a good idea to do this race so close to IM Louisville? If IMLou is your AAA race, I do NOT recommend you do any racing within ~4-5wks of Lou. That's crunch time, time to focus on preparing for the race.

Thank you so much for your time!

  • Hi Coach

Hope you had a very merry Christmas and got some rest and time with your friends & family. I'm back again with some changes to my race schedule for 2016. Could you create a new TSR with the following races for me?

    5/22/2016 Texasman X50 (1 mile swim, 40 mile bike, 10 mile run)
    7/17/2016 IM 70.3 Racine ((A race))
9/24/2016 USAT Long Course World Championship (4K/120K/30K) ((b/c race))
11/20/2016 IM Arizona 140.6 ((AA race))

    Thanks so much!
