CAMP WEEK INPUT PLEASE

Hi everyone!

Next week is camp week and although every question can be answered via Wiki, I'd like to ask for input regarding this mileage.

I'm not taking Friday off work, so I'll be moving everything forward one day; Saturday 112 bike followed by 1 hour run, Sunday 112 (?) followed by long run Monday. My main question is in regards to the 2nd 112 ride.  In  week 15 it states if you're a beginner ride at least 56 miles or advanced go 6 hours or 112. I'm not a beginner, IMAZ will be my 6th IM, yet I'm hardly advanced.  I do feel like I have a monkey on my back regarding pokey bike times, so do I bite the bullet and go at least 6 hours on day 2?  I am afraid of getting injured riding 112 running off bike 1 hour then riding 112 (or 6 hours the 2nd day), followed by a long run on day 3!

I am tempted to suck it up and get out of my comfort zone by going the distance, yet I've never done the above and it sounds like an injury waiting to happen.

Please let me know what your thoughts are and I'm open to constructive criticism and tough love!

Thanks!

Dana

  • My suggestion would be to see how you feel on day 2. Perhaps make the second day a 2 loop course so you have the option to bail at 56. Last year that is what I did. Plan to go 112 but give yourself an out.

My bigger concern is the long run on Monday and then following it with another long run on Thursday. It is already really tough doing the Sunday/Thursday combo. I wonder if any one has any suggestions on what to do about that?
  • Great idea on the 2 loop course, Peter. I'll probably move my Thursday long run to Friday, so I am running Monday and Friday. I've already adjusted my plan where I am riding long on Sunday and doing my ABP Monday morning.
  • doing back to back 112 rides is tough. bailing after 56 on day two is still pretty legit. if you are worried about injuries, which we all really should be, I would really watch for how the long run feels. how much are you forcing it. is it a suffer fest death march. Back off if it becomes one. I agree with the concern over doing a long run on Monday followed by a long run on Thursday. The Thursday long run may need to be reduced if you still aren't recovered.
  • I have had to do some of the shifting you mention. I went back to the old way and did my long run on Thursday (not Monday as you propose, though this might be too late to help that) and then did the RR on Saturday and a big ride on Sunday only. The option to bail on Sunday is a great idea I wish I would have thought of because that can prove to be a long day.
  • The camp week workout sequence is supposed to be tough, that's the point. It's mostly bike focused, which greatly reduces the risk of injury. Ideally you will feel well enough to push yourself outside of your comfort zone.

I can't take Friday off work either, so I'm planning the same basic schedule as you - bike and run on Saturday, bike on Sunday and long run on Monday. I've done this before without issue.

I have not had problems with the Monday / Thursday long run combo, but I would scale down the Thursday run based on how you feel at the time.

In case you're interested, my revised plan is
Camp week Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday per plan
Camp week Thursday ~1 hour run
Camp week Friday - Thursday's swim
    Camp week Saturday - Friday's bike/run
Camp week Sunday - Saturday's bike
Week 16 Monday - Camp week Sunday run
    Week 16 Tuesday - Off
    Week 16 Wednesday - Tuesday's swim
Week 16 Thursday - per plan based on how I feel, nothing hard
Week 16 Friday - back on plan
  • Highly recommend you don't do the long run on Monday. If you can't make a 3 day weekend out of it, then recommend you do:

    • Thurs long run
    • Regular routine on Friday
    • ~6hr ride on Saturday
    • 4-5hrs ride on Sunday.

Back to back long rides of this length are tough, no doubt. But pushing that long run to Monday will only significantly disturb your downstream workouts the next week.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you everyone for your input! My intention was to make my 3-day weekend Sat-Mon with Tues. off like Clark is suggesting.

Coach Rich, is your above suggestion a Saturday 6 hour ride followed by a 1 hour run? I thought for sure you'd tell me to suck it up and do double 112 rides!
