Calvin' Micro Thread
Coach Patrick,
Hope KONA was great for you! Your last minute input before my CHOO race was very helpful and I couldn't be happier w/ my first time finish time.
Got a quick "run" question. I've heard at least twice that it is better for example when training on the bike, to ride either slower or faster than the "usual" pace. That the usual pace doesn't benefit the rider, but riding slower or faster leads to greater gains. I can see the faster ride, leading to greater gains, but why would a slower pace be more beneficial than a "usual" comfortable pace?
If there is no merit to this theory that I've heard, than no worries!
Thanx,
Calvin

I think that theory you discuss is one where the "normal" pace has been exhausted; the inherent assumption is that you have a single pace you ride all the time (Which you don't inside EN)...that said, there is a time when riding the same effort continuously is important (usually when increasing volume -- easily done when effort / speed remains fixed).
IF you were to do a big bike week as part of your plan, we'd have you dial it down for sure....but otherwise the EN plans are just fine.
For you, I see your personal room for gains lying in:
1. Learning to ride like a triathlete, stay aero, etc.
2. Learning how to optimally fuel yourself for the bike AND run...
3. Saving up for a powermeter so you can be at your best!
I'm planning on discontinuing your coaching service but wanted to at least give you an explanation so that it wouldn't leave you wondering.
Your services have been fantastic and just for the pearls that I gained even before IM CHOO, it was worth it to join for just 2 months! I only have great things to say about E.N.!
I'm not leaving because I'm dissatisfied or anything like that. Aside from running 2 dental practices and also the director of a non-profit ministry, I'm swamped for time. So, I rarely am ever able to get on to the EN website to read, learn, or even follow the prescribed workouts. Because I personally dislike working out by myself, I've found post race, that it is easiest for me to run w/ the local running groups, swim and bike w/ the local tri groups as my main means of staying in shape during the O.S. I am planning on doing full and half IM's again next season, but as I'm not shooting to qualify for KONA and am pretty happy w/ the finish times I'm coming up w/ now, I'm totally content w/ training for the sake of great fitness and finishing races as best as I can.
However, I will always be glad to recommend you guys to others and am thankful for all your help!
Wish the best for you guys!
Calvin
Don't be a stranger at the races and have fun with your training and racing!
Best,
