Kona Legacy program questions

So, I've got ironman number 11 under my belt. One more and I would be eligible for the Legacy program. Has anyone out there gotten a legacy spot? If so, did you get a spot on your first try? Or did you apply and not get a spot? Wondering what my chances are when I get number 12. Is this just a way for WTC to keep me hooked and dangle the carrot in front of me?

  • don't know.   but will follow the responses.     i am legacy eligible but will hold off for now.
  • Still working on it Tom (9 down), but here's what I know. More people are going this route and the supply of 100 is not sufficient. So not everyone gets it the first year. Once you reach 12, you have to keep doing one every year, to stay eligible ... you must have the 12 finishes with completions in each of the past 2 years. So if you reach 12 and take a year off, then you would have to complete one more in each of the following 2 years to reestablish your eligibility. When WTC allocates the 100 slots, the first ones are going to those who got passed over on their initial year of eligibility. The question is how do they decide how to divvy up the remainder. Say that last year there were 120 eligible with 20 pass overs and those 20 all remain eligible this year. That leaves 80 to give out. And say this year there are 140 newly eligible for the first time (I expect it will grow each year), then which 80 of that new cohort get a slot and which 60 get passed over? I suspect they are issuing them from the oldest to the youngest which bodes well for us, but you never know. The other thing about the program is that if you get selected in the first year, then Kona will be your 14th IM. If you are deferred a year, then Kona will be your 15th IM. I can see that number growing as more people become eligible. It is an ingenious marketing program. I will try to KQ when I age up in 2017, but if it doesn't happen that year, then I will be in LQ territory.
  • my local team captain did indeed get in (and just raced and retired from IM) this year, his first try.

I don't like Paul's math! This is the only way I will ever get to Kona with only one slot per ag and LOTS of fast women in my ag and beyond. I'll have to either outlive the competition or be really lucky if and when I get to 12. 6 down, and not really sure I've got another six in me!
  • Trish, how many had your team captain done? and how old is he (based on Paul's theory)?

The other question is how many legacy slots will they have in the future. Given the regular lottery which had 100 slots is no longer, will they just make those 100 legacy slots also or will they just go away.
  • Everyone is asking where those 100 slots are going, as well as those from Tahoe and the reduction from 50 to 40 at most races next year. There are going to be some new races announced in the near future but that will only suck up 40 each. I hope they add to the Legacy program but I still think they have other plans.
