How Little Can I Run?

During my true off-season Nov-Dec. (pre JOS) I am going to work with a cycling coach, maybe do some cyclocross and have fun with fitness. Fun for me generally doesn't include running, except maybe some leisurely runs with the wife and/or dog.  However, I don't totally want to bail on running (well, I want to...) and lose what little fitness I have.

How little can I get away with running to not totally lose everything?  And what should those runs look like?  I could probably do a track WKO once a week cuz there are lights (And I actually like 200/400m repeats and stuff like that), and maybe a weekend run.  I'd like to avoid the dreadmill til I absolutely have to for JOS.

  • 3 x 30' runs is my minimum, and very easy to get done.
  • Kim, I gotta ask- You are an awesome teammate and I'm glad you do tri's, but from your posts it really seems like you like biking and don't like running or swimming. Why don't you just trade in this tri stuff and doing cycling? This stuff is suppose to be fun so if it is always a chore, might need to reconsider.
  • Rachel- Fair question, and one I have asked myself! My aversion to running goes back many years and is mostly in my head. Most of the time, I bitch and moan when I have to run, but while I'm doing it, I actually enjoy it sometimes, go figure. Same for swimming. I def enjoy cycling more but I do like the S/B/R training and racing. It is weird, I know. 2016 is def going to be more cycling focused. (I was afraid to do too much bike racing in 2015 for fear of getting hurt prior to IMChoo, which I proved to be a valid concern after crashing in my first race in May!) But I'm also doing a Half IM in June so I don't want to totally lose any running fitness I might have.

I'm sure it doesn't make sense since I don't even get it myself! image
  • What Rich Said.

just go out and run at whatever pace you want...
  • Whatever you do is still better then what the average person does and is commendable. You are the less then 1% of the population that has the fortitude to do this, so give your self some credit.  The reality of it is, after a little time off you will miss it, and will be itching to get back at it!

  • What Rich said above times 10.

In a couple of months, before starting the EN "outseason" program I would totally suggest slowly building that aerobic base back up over at least a few weeks before starting back up with intense running workouts.
  • Kim, you KNOW you really love to run:-) Kidding... But as said, run when you feel like it - especially the leisurely ones you enjoy with wife/dog! Be careful doing the speedy stuff though if you are cutting back a lot. Just make it fun again!
