Cool Cycling Events?
Since I'm planning on more cycling next year, I wanted to see if anyone had some recos for cool cycling events. Races, rides or camps. Travel is fine, U.S. Preferred. A "normal" amount of climbing is ok, but definitely not something like climbing Mt Washington. Nice scenery/general location a must! Road cycling or something suitable for cross bike is ok too. Time of year doesn't matter much, but not looking for anything with a high probability of being too cold.
Hopefully Kori will chime in about the Gran Fondo she just did! Thanks!

Full transparency, I'm biased. I lived in Monterey for two years and am itching for any chance to go back there.

it would be great if someone could post good resources for finding rides. I'd like to find an east coast version of "ride the rockies" or the double triple, etc...
I usually look for bike rides and races on Bikereg.com but if I were to search the entire country, I'd have no idea where to start!
Colorado, Cali(loved the places I went on TOC), Wyoming, VT, NH, NY (think of how big this state is) etc... if this is vacation, what do you want to see? rolling hills? mountains? seaside vistas? meadows? (Btw, TOC has all of that!) just sayin...
Scott -TOC would be perfect but I'm too slow. Seaside is ideal but anything perty is fine. Any state...
Kim, if you want to come to south Louisiana in the middle of March consider riding Rouge Roubaix with us. The Gran Fondo is on a Saturday and the cat/women races are Sunday. It's close enough to New Orleans to make a small vacation out of it. Hit me up if you have any questions about the ride or area.
Rouge Roubiax
Day 1 you do a 11 mile mountain bike ride
Day 2 100 mile bike ride
Day 3 is a 13 mile trail run
At the end of it you get this wood trophy. Depending on the weather of course the 100 mile can be pretty rough, easy flat course but 100+ temps and wind can make it hard. The two years I did the 100 we had nice weather. I plan to do the triple threat some year but need to work through my fear of mountain biking first.
Attempted it this year, but fell (aka crashed) HARD within the first 4 miles of the MTB race, and broke 2 ribs. Still rode the 100 miles the next day, sitting on every wheel I could. We had great conditions this year (low temps in the 70s-80s and little wind), and I averaged over 25mph the first two hours. Still rode a 4:37 for the 100.
Didn't even attempt the trail half mary on Sunday with the ribs. That would've been too much.
Next year, for IMCHOO training, I'll be going back and riding the 100 on Saturday and running the half mary on Sunday. Won't attempt another MTB race with an IM on the schedule.
If I had the option, I'd go to the ToC camp that Rich puts on, then fly to Mallorca to finish off the second week. That'd be EPIC!
There's also the Triple Bypass in CO in July. 120 miles one way, with 10k+ of climbing. If you're REALLY adventurous, do the "double triple", which brings you back the other way the next day (total of 240miles with 20k+ of climbing in two days!).
