Planters Wart

So... I have a plantars wart on my heel. At first I thought maybe I had stepped on something like a splinter, but then I showed my mom and she figured out it is a wart. This little bastard is really painful. I can run ok, but my heel will be really tender for the rest of the day. How do I get rid of this thing? I have seen freezing kits and over the counter stuff with salicylic acid. My wife suggests rubbing garlic on it (she is into natural remedies).

I will also mention that back when I thought it was a splinter or glass I took a knife to the area and dug around trying to find something. Did I do anything that will make it harder to treat it? Please help!

  • Peter,
I had one a while back. I tried all the OTC stuff....no luck. I ended up going to the podiatrist who had put the industrial strength acid on it every night. Then about every week or so, I would go into the office to have him cut away the dead skin.
It has been a little over two years and it hasn't come back yet.

  • ^^^This. I would go to a podiatrist.

The OTC stuff might not get deep enough to kill the root and it will just drag out the process longer.
  • Alright, I will go to the Dr. Thanks.
  • We went through this with my daughter (6 yo) last year. It was a buggar to get off. We tried the OTC stuff and it marginally worked. We bought a sheet of the salicilic acid stuff off of Amazon which is better than the dots you get in the store. It seemed like it was doing something, but you really have to remove the dead skin every other day to work it along. Here's the long story of our 6 month experience.

We finally got into the skin Dr. and they applied blister beetle juice, (don't remember the chemical name) to cause an inflammatory reaction. They paint this gel on and 2-3 hours later you need to thoroughly wash it off. After 2 hours the wart area had a half dollar sized blister on it and was extremely painful. By morning it was slightly larger, but about 3/4" of inch thick.

I tried to drain the fluid, but the patient wasn't very keen on my use of a needle on her foot. She could not walk on it, so off to the convenience care Dr we went. The Dr. numbed the area, drained the blister and for good measure proceed to cut the wart head off. Not a good day for my daughter as the topical numbing didn't work on the underlying tissue.

After the wound healed, we continued with the salicilic acid patches as directed by the skin dr. After two more months, the wart was declared gone.

Our daughter's Dr. basically called the treatment medieval. You can freeze it, use a chemical burning agent or surgically cut it out. Our daughter wouldn't go for freezing and the beetle juice stiff seemed less invasive. It wasn't, but it worked.

Sorry for the long way around here. Just wanted to paint the realistic picture of how it may go. Get it while it's small though.

My suggestion....pour some 'Tussin on it!

  • @ Jeremy.....HYSTERICAL!!

But in my family is was that red liquid antiseptic.....mercurochrome(I know I'm dating myself). My Mom used it for everything! My younger brother and I crack-up talking about that now....especially since the FDA declared it as "not generally considered as safe and effective" in 1998....whooops!
  • Mercurochrome - you mean that red stuff with the long applicator that you rub all over a wound and then put it back in the bottle. That's sanitary. Those were the days.
  • Peter, I've been struggling with them for over two yrs. Started with 3 small warts on my rt foot on the ball and heel. Used otc and didn't cure, but didn't spread. One day decided to use a micro grater to remove dead skin and they spread to the point where I had about 30 on my rt and 5 on lt. Went to dr who could sympathize (10:15 IMCA!) and attempted to freeze w liquid nitrogen. They were so deep nothing happened. Waited until next training break, removed as much skin as possible, and did 2nd freeze on both feet. He really went at it. Created blisters like the beetle juice stuff mentioned above. Couldn't walk for 48hrs. Started running after a week. Took out about a fourth of them. Trained/raced a few months then went for another freeze on my break. This time only did rt foot. Took out a few more, but the main cluster was still there. Went back 2 weeks later and froze again. Looks like 90% is gone. That's where I'm at now. I'll probably go in for one more before the end of the year to try and get them all.
It's so hard going through the treatment knowing how much it hurts and that it will take you out for a few days. I think it was good that you cut out as much as you could. I would advise having it frozen by the doctor. Remove as much skin as possible, let the dr freeze as long as you can handle then freeze again.
  • As most have said here, go to the doctor. I've had a couple rounds of them over the years. The doctors put the heavy duty stuff on and I came back every week for a month or so before they cleared up. They are difficult to get rid of!
