Locking Knee on Race efforts

Hey hoping for a little help here.

Back story four (4) days before my half marathon, I was lunging on the ground in order to keep the hamstrings loose. When I got up, I put way to much weight on my right knee and I heard a POP!  I was freaking out... I had a hard time walking around. When I tried to walk downstairs I almost lost it and nearly fell down the stairs. It hurts sooooo bad. later that night, I woke up feeling discomfort. I again tried to walk down the stairs (thank god I was death gripping the railing) and I almost went down again! I was in tears.... after about pacing around for 30-45mins my knee again went POP!!!!

I was freaking out again... but, my knee felt better and the next day I was able to shuffle along.

On race day, I warmed up pretty well 10 mins and started the race.

I was killing it (targeting sub 2:30) ! then all of a sudden around miles 6-8 my knee started to lock up (peg leg syndrom). I had to slow the pace and it seemed to relieve itself. I kept on trucking, and it wasn't until I hit a slight down hill section (which of course turned to macadem surface vs trail) I ended up getting that horrible pain and ended up walking that section.

Once I got over the bridge (200m roughly) I was able to start running again and the mojo came back! I hit the last 2 miles and gunned it!

however, this weird pain re manifests itself on longer (mile+) repeats... Does anyone have any thoughts?!!!

  • I'm not an orthopedic surgeon but it sounds like you have a tear in your meniscus. I'd make an appointment with a reputable orthopedic surgeon.
  • I had exactly the same issue as you last winter, it started when I had to stop running quickly because of a %//"$$ cat coming from nowhere.

it was hurting so much I couldnt walk by moving legs normally, I had to walk side way, knee couldn't bend anymore. Everything was coming back after 2-3 hours but it was hurting so much that I was always scare to go back at running.

I went to see a doctor and told me I have a small tear in my meniscus and put me to rest for 10 days, which I did but never had that issue again after.

    good luck!
  • thanks guys! here's another point, it doesn't actually hurt though, the leg just goes to this peg leg movement... if I slow down, I can start running again.

it also happens more often on an paved surface vs trail.

  • I would definitely get it checked, so you know where you are so that you can recover and strengthen the area around that knee.

    Good Luck
  • Yeah I asked my friend who is a PA, she recommended that stretching specifically my hamstrings may help. If not, then it's to the PT.

When the new year starts, I'll hit the chiropractor then PT. Hopefully this all goes away and no MRIs.... those things are expensive and we all know how insurance costs are now....

thanks for the care and your inputs!!

  • As someone who frequents surgeries and injuries, you WILL spend more money self diagnosing. I ended up paying cash for my latest MRI's and with a cash discount it cost me less. I knew what the problem was and I was then able to get multiple opinions on next steps. Ive even ask teammates ways to go, bottom line, a doctor and a scan is what you need.

Look at it like this, anyone can speculate, a scan shows the truth. Ive broken my spine, Ive had multiple back surgeries and now currently have a torn meniscus myself. Through some of those issues, I chose to "see what might happen" and make my own plan. Trust me, I know this road all to well. In my line of work I always say "let me do what Im good at and you do what you're good at" this is that same thing. Let the doctors do what they are good at so you can get back to making your triathlon plans.

@Mariah you must be made of Iron!

thanks for your thoughts! I spoke with the Dr. about my back/knee and she has told me to follow up with the PT. I'll let you guys know what happens!

Thanks for the support, I really appreciate it!
