Rich Worth's Macro thread
After talking to one of my Ironman buddies, he has me partially convinced at a run at a BQ marathon attempt, potentially on 04/09/15 at the Martian Marathon. I'm thinking that this shouldn't hurt my IM Louisville goals (my A race, everything else during my season would be a B or C race), since is so far out. I'm on the fence about it, but I'm leaning more towards doing it. My initial thought is that it could be good because it would maintain my run fitness that I am building for the 50K in December. I am just worried that I might see my bike fitness start to really take a dive.
I was looking over my season roadmap and it looks like it would definitely need to change, if I decided to do it. From the looks of it, it would probably eat up over 1/2 of my planned outseason. Thoughts? I've made zero commitments as of now, so telling me its a bad idea wouldn't be a bad thing! If it wouldn't seem like an issue for my A race, should I just resubmit a new season roadmap?

Hey Rich,
Sorry I missed this! Is this his BQ attempt or yours? If his, would you be up for not racing the entire marathon, bailing at some point, etc? Please go here to read our thoughts on marathons and triathlon training.
It's not a deal breaker but there are opportunity, mental, and other costs associated with racing a marathon in route to an Ironman.
This would be a BQ attempt for him and would just be a bonus for me (I've haven't really come close to BQ, but my times over the past year would suggest it is a possibility). I know it would not be in my best interests to do this in route to IM Louisville, but my initial thought was that the April to October gap might be long enough that it would be ok.
After some thought (and reading the link you provided), I will probably bail on the BQ attempt. I might still run the marathon for support and fun, but I want my training to stay focused on my A race at IM Louisville and not miss out building my bike with the outseason plan (which BQ marathon training would directly impact).
Thanks for the insight and making me think about my priorities races before signing up for something willy nilly.
