I WON!!--A free entry to upcoming Ironman/IM 70.3 event

I entered a drawing while at Ironman 70.3 California in Oceanside with Philadelphia Insurance and lo and behold I was picked to receive a free entry to an upcoming 2010 Ironman or Ironman 70.3 event.  They have given me a choice of about 10 different races in the U.S.  I am already signed up for IMCDA and frankly I wasn't planning on doing another Ironman event in 2010.

But..... looking at the calendar I am thinking about Ironman 70.3 Austin in October or Ironman Arizona in November.

so what to do, what to do.  Any of you out there got any ideas?  I am just looking to have some fun with this extra event.  Doing another 70.3 sound great to me, i could probably pull it off with my available training time, but another Ironman kind of seems unattainable since I am in the heart of my IMCDA training and my family/social life is struggling.  I am anxious to get this over with.

Thanks everyone...

  • This isn't one of those deals you have to go to a presentation on time shares is it

    Cool!

  • Hah, hah. Nope it isn't. Very thankful to Philadelphia Insurance for their involvement and sponsorship of many Ironman events.
  • How about Kona? Is that race one of your choices?
  •  Mike - I do CDA and AZ (Nov) every year, and have no problem with the training cycle, even living in a place where November means rain every day. I strongly suggest IM AZ if it fits your schedule for several reasons:

    1. The weather the past two years has been PERFECT: 65-70F, minimal winds, cloudless sky.

    2. The November date provides a lot of running in the cool of the evening and shade.

    3. The course is FAST, making it pretty easy to get an IM PR if that's a goal.

    4. FInally, most important, word got around real quick about how much fun the Nov. race is compared to the April one. The 2010 race sold out in something like 90 seconds (OK, slight exaggeration) online.

I've done most if the NA IM races (not St G or Louisville), and this one is my favorite.

Political note: there is a lot of noise about boycotting the state due to the "show me your papers" bill. I am endorsing neither that bill, nor a boycott, which will only hurt the people already being hurt by the bill.

  • I'm signed up for IMCDA and IMAZ as well. After a couple of weeks off in July, I'm going to do a little OS work, then start ramping again for Arizona. I'm not in Al's league yet to triple, but the IMCDA - IMAZ combo seemed like a very doable double to me...at least it did when I signed up! image But if it's interfering with the social life, then maybe Austin's not a bad choice.
  • @Al--Thanks for the info and the list you provided. Finishing one Ironman event will be phenomenal, but finishing TWO in the same year would be legendary (well, to me anyway).

A friend of mine that does these things all the time, agrees with you, Paul, that IMCDA with a short break and then build up again for IMAZ makes perfect sense and why would I even question it. Hah! Well, we shall see.

For right now, I am leaning on the 70.3 in Austin, also since the bike course goes right by my grandmother's place and I have some long-lost cousins in the local area. But my true passion is for the Ironman distance. My girlfriend's family is from the Southwest and I know I would have great local support down there, too.

I think I will wait til I finish IMCDA to see how things go before making the decision. If I don't succeed in CDA then IMAZ will definately be the fall back. If I am happy with the IM distance and feel that I've gotten all that I wanted from it, then the 70.3 could be a good choice.

And NO, Kona was not offered. That was my first question to them. They laughed outright and said, "keep dreaming." Maybe next time.
