How do you qualify for long course nationals?

I've seen some discussion in the forums about long course nationals and found the USAT website less than helpful, so what exactly is this and how does one qualify?  Also, under USAT-speak does long course" mean the 70.3 distance?  Thanks!

  • There is no qualification for entering USA long course Natls. Usually are held at a Half IM distance and they act as a qualifier for Long course worlds which is the old Nice (as in France) distance 4k/120k/30k.
  • In 2016, the USAT National LC Championships in Miami, FL on Nov 13 will be my season ending A race. My goal, which should be pretty easy to meet given my AG, is to be on the USA team going to the ITU World LC Championships in 2017 in Penticton, BC, on the old IM Canada course, at the distances Rob notes.

The USAT qualifying race will be run @ the half iron distances of 1.9/90/21 km. I'd love to see a lot of ENers join me at one, and hopefully both, of these events.

The USAT NC and ITU WC have all the glamour, activity, and world class competition as WTC events...multi-day expos, heliocopters overhead, large competitive field with intense AG rivalries. For me, a good change of pace after burning out by focusing exclusively on Ironman the past 10 years.
  • I'm very seriously considering this same thing, Al.
  • Al, I'll be at 2016 Miami Man too.  That's because I live in Miami, not because I'll qualify

  • Top 20 or sometimes 25 in the AG will usually be offered spots to LC Worlds.
  • Count me in! I've raced ITU Long Course Triathlon Worlds at Almere, Holland and Motala, Sweden; and ITU Long Course Duathlon Worlds at Zofingen, Switzerland. This is like Kona-light for those of us who are KQ challenged. On the other hand, the ITU worlds have a unique vibe that WTC can't touch - i.e., 100% of the field racing in their national uniforms. I might add that the "parade of nations" at Sweden this year was a lot of fun with everyone in matching team uniforms; the one in Austria for 70.3 Worlds was - meh - a poor attempt by WTC to mimic the ITU model.

On the one hand, Miami might be a little more competitive than a typical qualifying race because Penticton isn't going to cost anything remotely close as going to Europe or Australia. On the other hand, Miami Man will be late in the season and a whole boatload of people are trying to qualifying for IM70.3 Worlds in Chattanooga for 2017 ... just 2 weeks after Penticton. All in all, I would say that if you put in a respectable performance you will likely make the team.
  • This is great info. I'm restricted to a diet of 70.3 and shorter next year, but the timing of LC Nationals is a great one, and I think I can entice my lovely wife to Florida that time of year. Putting that to the top of the A-list.

  • so that I understand correctly, you do not need to qualify at a USAT sanctioned event (leading up to) race the LC Nationals in November? Anyone can sign up and race?
  • Correct. In fact, I am already registered for Miami Man 2016 and the 2015 event doesn't even happen until this weekend. Early registration is $225 and available at http://multirace.us/events/82 After early registration is over (next week??), the price goes to $375.
  • Ha, I just checked the 2016 participant list and there are 20 already signed up, but I'm the only one in M55. Victory is mine!
  • Hey Paul, thanks for saving me $150!!!
  • count me in for '17... i have NYC Mary 2 weeks before, this year..
