Wow, just read this thread. We have an espresso machine right next to a soda machine dispensing either Diet Pepsi or Diet Coke depending on what box of syrup I buy. I could use the carbonated water tab...
I give it up here and there, but in the summer I might as well have a diet coke IV. And I feel a lot better after reading Macca's comments in "I'm Here to Win". Macca credits Coke for turning around his losing streak at Kona. He failed miserably when he followed the nutritionists advice and then started listening to people who actually compete. Basically, screw the scientists and listen to other athletes.
No, he's not suggesting to drink it daily, and I shouldn't drink so much of it, but I cannot get enough fluid if I go water only.
I'm no stranger to supplementing my training nutrition with random stuff from gas stations: candy bars, cokes, etc. My final ride of my training camp this past week was a 112 mile bike at 6500-8k elevation, crazy windy, solo, a lot of it on a highway (65mph, wide shoulder), etc. I had 387 miles in my legs at the start of the ride. Light breakfast and nothing but Powerbar Perform on the bike and a bag of powder. I bought a Coke at mile 50 and sipped it for the next 45'. Really, really made my day and was able to finish the ride very strong. I think a lot went to that last 90' performance, not the least being I just wanted to crush myself, but I will now likely have 1-2 frozen bottles of coke in my BSN bag. That's 480cals of pure sugar and caffiene goodness right thar'.

I later read that Asparmetane is suspected of causing headackes...
