Tri-Bike Hydration

Hello fellow ENers.  I am new to Triathlon and I just purchased my first tri-bike.  I am wondering what everyone thinks about placement of hydration.  I see many different systems and I think with all the time and money invested in getting these bikes as aero as possible, it would be wise to get the best and most effective hydration system.  I see some people have the 2 bottles behind the seat which looks like it allows for maximum aerodynamics due to the body blocking the wind already. I also see the bottle between the aero bars and that looks like a good option too.  What are your thoughts?  Also, how a bout placement of a bag for spare tires etc.?

  • Anthony, first - lots of collective wisdom on this thread LINK

I think there are two answers to your bottle placement question.  Training - anyway you can get it on the bike, seat tube/downtube/BTA/BYA setup.  Racing depends on your consumption rate / needs and race distance.  Personally, I got with one bottle on the seat tube and one BTA bottle (via my high tech aluminum bottle cage + two zip ties custom aero setup).

I also run a small under the seat bag for all my tube/lever/tool needs.

Good luck in your quest for 'sneaky speed' image

  • Thanks for that Link Roy, there's lots of great stuff there. I'll be sure to post a pic when I get my setup.

I use a Speedfil A2 mounted on my stem, and then have bottles behind the seat on the seat rails...for hot races.  The downtube bottle held my toolkit here.

In training I run a normal bottle on the downtube and three (!) on the back...so 5 bottles on the bike and one in my jersey!  image
