heart rate or pace

Hi Coach P--

So I'm thinking this OS is pretty wicked.  Feel myself getting more fit in my sleep image  But yesterday when I did my first bike/run brick, the goal on the run was midpoint z1-z2 pace.  So I did that based on pace.  It was fine until about 1.5 miles in at the turn around, then I started feeling how high my heart was- (which was about 165, about z3 isn or what I would expect at a 1/2 distance).  So I tried slowing down a bit, but then I was confused if I really should base it from the beginning on heart solely or pace?

is there a way to choose pace or heart?  Is it if I am tired or hot go heart?  I feel like I should know this by now, but I have LOTs more bike / runs in the next 12 weeks & just wondering how best to set this up?

thanks so much!

  • Sheri, thanks for the kudos and congrats on the hard work. I say that you use the HR...I personally am capping my runs at my IM HR....which is in z1-z2 land somewhere. I don't want that escalating HR to being out of breath (that's what that bike ride is for).

Let me know what you choose!
  • Sheri - great job. +1 to Coach P above. Also, if this is your first brick run, kindly allow your body/mind time to adapt to running off the bike. Soon you will own it, but it just takes some time for your heart/body.

While admittedly I prefer to train with pace, I only use HR when running a brick.

Finally, check out the wiki race execution page. There is a video from the coaches on racing in the heat and managing expectations as well as a post from Al Truscott that has more than we could ever want to know.

    Best of luck.
  • Thanks ya'll!! I will go forward a bit clearer now.
    Happy Thanksgiving.
