Rear Wheel 10/11s question

Shopping for that new bike.  Moving towards the 11s generation.  Hoping to be going di2 11s next off season.

If I buy the bike with an Ultegra 6800 11s build, I'm confused about how to handle my rear wheel situation.  I race on some older zipp 808s and I train on some Planet X 80mm deep wheels.  I can't verify the ~6 year old Zipps at this point, but the PX wheels are sold as Shimano 10/11 speed.

Does that mean that I chose the 10 speed version when I bought them or does that mean my hub can handle a change to an 11 speed cassette if I buy the new bike and want to use my old training wheels?

If not, is a conversion difficult or expensive?

Same question for the Zipps, also, I guess.  But, I am looking at buying a rear Flo 90 for racing.  This wouldn't help me with the training rides, tho.

Thoughts and feedback greatly appreciated.

  • Chris - definitely go to the 11 speed generation.

The hub is your choke point. Your hub may or may not handle the change, but it should not dictate your switch to the 11 speed.

Worst case scenario a new hub is not cost prohibitive or difficult.
  • Right.

So, just to be clear...when I see Shimano 10/11 spd in the specs, does that means buyer chooses 10speed hub OR 11speed hub? Or, does that mean the hub is good to go for a 10s cassette AND an 11s cassette?

Or, will I need to 'convert' my existing 10s hub to an 11s?

Or, will I need a new hub altogether? Which would require a new wheel build, right? So, if this is the case, may as well just get a new wheel for the 11s, both training wheel and racing wheel for the back?
  • When you purchase a new group set, you want to specify you want an 11 speed.

At the end of the day, the width of the hub dictates compatibility with the 10/11 speed.

Your hub on your PX wheels are 10/11 compatible so you are solid there; however, concerning the zipps, the hub may not be wide enough to support the space an 11 speed cassette requires.

Next step is to confirm in your zipp hub is 10/11 speed compatible or only 10 speed.

Worst case scenario you would have to replace the zipp hub. If you have ever changed a cassette this is an incredibly easy job. In addition, this is not a big spend to have your LBS knock out if needed.
  • My guess is the older Zipp is not compatible. I went to 11-speed this year and by Zipp 900 disc was not able to be upgraded. I was going to mess around with trying to figure out a solution and Zipp gave me an upgrade to a Super 9 for a very low price (I had to send them my old 900).
  • for the PX 10/11 speed compatible means that the freehub has enough space to accommodate an 11-spd cassette. If you are using it with a 10-spd cassette, then there is likely a spacer ring behind your cassette. To swap that to an 11-speed, simply get am 11-spd cassette, remover the spacer and you're all set.

Regarding the old Zipp, sorry, but I agree with the others that it is unlikely to be able to accommodate the 11-speed cassette, but I wouldn't let that dissuade you from moving to the newer technology.
  • OK, you guys have been very helpful.

Looks like I'll get to keep my training wheels.

As for a rear racing wheel, I think I'll probably pick up a Flo 90 that will work with the new groupset.

I might even change the Zipp hub, in addition to picking up the newer Flo, if its not that hard. I'm about a 7 on the DIY 1-10 scale. Just haven't changed a hub before.

    Thx again!
  • Chris,
Don't give up on your Zipp wheels yet. Check out Edco Monoblock or Token cassettes. They are 11 speed cassettes designed to fit on a 10 speed hub. Just by looking at pictures, it appears the Edco allows for the extra width on the outboard side of the cassette, while the Token lets the extra width hang over on the spoke side of the cassette. I will have Brandon DuMontier respond to this thread as he had a similar situation. He wanted to keep using an existing set of wheels on a newer bike with electronic 11 sp shifting. I think Brandon went with the Token.
  • Kane is correct. I have an 11sp DI2 bike and my old race wheels were Reynolds DV3K 10s. I bought a Token cassette on Amazon to take a chance and see if it works and it works like a charm. Just search for "Token Products CNC 11-28 Shimano/Sram 11-Speed Cassette" (or 11-25) in Amazon and you will find them. Based on things I have heard and read, it is hit or miss with whether they fit on the hub or not. It is pretty wheel specific...some work others do not.

Unfortunately, I just looked at Amazon and it looks like the cassettes are currently $300. I paid $95 shipped for mine.

    Good luck.

  • Chris you are not out of luck with the older zipp wheels.

You can remove a cog via the darkspeed works trick.
You can buy a monoblock cassette
You can also buy a campy hub body and cassette.

  • Thanks guys

Looking in to all of these options.

Most important thing I've taken away is that I shouldn't let this detail keep me from scooping up a really great bike.

    Really appreciate it!
