Is there a "mini" equivalent to 920XT for petite women?

Hi all! I'm new to EN and long distance training - this season will be my first 70.3, so I'm in gearing up mode - both training and equipment-wise. :-) The Garmin 920XT watch looks like the hands down favorite for tracking all aspects of tri training, so I ordered one... It just got here and I'm looking at it in the box and thinking it looks ridiculously huge - it makes my current watch look like a toy.(!) I'm on the small side to begin with (5'2") and have really small wrists - I'm betting the face of the 920 is greater than the width of my wrist.

What I've got now is a Polar FT7 with a Bluetooth HR strap. Maybe I don't need to upgrade after all? Maybe I should wear the XT on my ankle? ;-) Maybe there's a different model I should be looking at that has more bells and whistles AND is designed for small people? Recommendations welcome!

  • Catherine- first welcome to the team and long distance training!

I'm also a l'il peep and struggle with GPS watches (my husband says they look like a microwave on my wrist). Unfortunately the answer is- no, there's not really a 920XT small equivalent. BUT- the question you need to answer first is, what functionality do you need/want in your GPS unit. The 920XT (and 910XT) is great if you want one unit for everything and you are training with power on the bike. But- if you primarily use the GPS unit for running, and then have a separate computer for your bike- well then there are a lot of other smaller & cheaper options.

PS- I just upgraded from the 910 to the 920. I like having one tool for everything and I use it for swim, bike, and run. So the size is a trade-off I'm willing to make.
  • Little tiny baby wrists here as well. Agree with Nemo's points. I thought I had to have the 920, but after some feedback from folks here, I realized all I really needed was a GPS watch. I already have a bike computer (Garmin 500) and just use a regular old sports watch for swimming. I have the Forerunner 220 as my running watch. Cheaper and smaller, though anything makes little wrists look silly.
  • You might take a look at the vivo active - http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2015/01/vivoactive-smartwatch-vivofit2.html It's not exactly the same as the 910/920 but it has many of the same features and is a much slimmer. Biggest downside is no power meter support but if you already have a bike computer then you would be golden. Plus its a lot cheaper than the 920.

Another option might be the polar v800 - http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/06/polar-v800-depth-review.html but its probably too big too.
  • Sorry, I posted the wrong link for the vivoactive. The link I wanted is this one - http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2015/04/garmin-vivoactive-in-depth-review.html

BTW, it's on sale right now for $199
  • Thanks all! Really appreciate the input of the group! I'm looking into all 3 of your recommended options - will let you know what I decide!
  • Another great option is the 735xt; it's my fav gps watch and I've had a bunch. I wear it as a daily watch, and yet it's a fully functional tri watch with built in HR monitor, Bluetooth and activity tracking. 8 hour battery is plenty if your using a dedicated bike computer
  • I have the 920XT and looking at it?  it is wider than my wrist, but now am so comfortable with it, that I hardly notice it as I love the functions of the watch and wear it every day.  I even put an extra hair scrunchie around the base of it, as I have long hair!   Let us know what you decided upon!!  They are pricey, so asking wise questions is a great idea!
