2015/16 Nov OS Wk 5 Run Thread: Can you outrun a turkey??

It's Thanksgiving Week, or what we call around here, "Week 5."  You all are doing so well so far, and are inspiring me!  This week brings the challenge of Thanksgiving- travel, relatives, overeating, etc.  It also has the great advantages- Turkey Trots, carbo loading with pumpkin pie, and maybe the chance to run somewhere new if traveling.  Try your best to be consistent with running this week with all the holiday chaos, but don't stress a missed workout here or there.  Family is more important than workouts months out from your A race (or really anytime).

Looking forward to seeing how you guys kick butt at Turkey Trots across the country!  I'll be working on Thanksgiving, thankful for holiday pay that lets me do this sport!

  • Thanks for the advice Rachel. We're going to Anchorage so I know there won't be a bike and running is questionable because of the snow. But I just packed up the XC skis and I'm psyched about that. All of us XC ski and hopefully there will be skiing most days.
  • Family is always the way to go.

@MM- Have a safe trip. Pictures please.

Bagged on my 5k today. I finally sat down and melted. I plan on doing it tomorrow. I have been fighting a low grade head cold for the last week. I maybe an EN super chica but even I need a day on the couch.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Get up and do it again Jacklyn. With what you've been through the last couple of weeks (or longer) I can imagine there haven't been many days on the couch lately. Just to whet your appetite, here's a picture my daughter took on Friday morning just down the street from her house.  (and yes, that is a moose!)

  • 5k test done as promised. That SUCKED!!! It was 40 degrees and foggy.  My vDOT is a meager 27. How the mighty have slowed down. Oh well. Time to get to work.

@MM- WOW!!! That is so cool. I went to Alaska once. I wanted to see a moose. No dice. Still want to see one. Have a great trip. Be safe. Thank you for kicking me off the couch. Even though it was fun to watch cartoons all day and snuggle. I ate potato chips too! Well, no more of that stuff. Time to get to work. I have a bet with Coach that I have no intentions of loosing!

Have a fantastic day of rest everyone. Practice good self care and hydrate well.

  • I've seen a moose in both Alaska and Minnesota. They're big and funny looking. I've got a picture somewhere of one up in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Just standing in the water eating.

I got my bike done this morning. 2 x 12' @ 101/102%. First one felt pretty easy, but the second one was pretty hard. Had a couple little spin down breaks where I thought about giving up. Sucked it up and finished and even had a bit of second wind in the last 4' which let me get it back about 100%. Hoping to get my run in this evening before picking up my parents at the airport and unleashing the chaos of Thanksgiving!

    Good luck everyone!
  • Nice work all! Way to get it Jaclyn! And good luck with the Thanksgiving chaos Bill!! I TOTALLY here ya on that!

Got the run in this morning. 3.5 miles around TRP.

Run tomorrow afternoon! hopefully its not 18 degress like it was this morning!  Tis the season!

  • @ Rachel - Thanks for your words about missing a workout or so! I was just trying to figure things out and how to get it all done with thanksgiving and family stuff!!

  • Did the run on the TM last night.   Good luck to you all that are Turkey Trotting tomorrow!  I may get in a few extra miles with the long weekend.

  • Moved the Tues & Wed workouts forward a day so today's my Monday rest day in advance of tomorrow's turkey trot. Great weather forecasted for tomorrow in southeast Ohio (45 degrees at 8am). Turkey trot in the AM. Then home to get the smoker going for some huge turkey breasts and then it's time for football!!
  • Did a super short brick today (2 miles) @ Z1. Saving myself for a turkey trot half mary tomorrow. Still think I should be on target for hiting my mileage despite the shorter run.
  • Happy Thanksgiving week all! I am so excited for a couple days off from work. After a pretty brutal work month of 60-70+ hour work weeks I've been struggling to be as consistent as I would like this OutSeason. I think the work madness has come to an end so I'm going to keep pushing forward and try to take the time to get into these threads more! Going to do 4 miles for the turkey trot challenge tomorrow.
  • Happy Thanksgiving everyone!   My Tues brick run went as planned. I seem to be getting better at maintaining a steady z1-2 pace, since I had been over-cooking that pace in the past. The legs are feeling the cumulative fatigue and it feels a little better to just accept the z1-2 pace as OK.

  • Swapped the Wednesday bike and Thursday run in order to do the local 10K on Thanksgiving. Put in a solid 49:22, so picked up a VDOT point which is great. Happy to be back in the 40s and anxious to keep chipping away. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
  • Healed to point that running doesn't aggravate abdomen strain.  So, eased back into marathon training with an easy 5 mile walk-jog (4 min run + 1 min walk) on Tuesday, then yesterday a 5 mile brick @ sub-MP or Z2-to-Z3 7:10 pace, and for Thanksgiving some Turkey intervals (400 + 3 x 800 + 400) @ IP+ or Z5+ sub-6:00 pace. Will execute Thursday training ride later to burn off today's food.

    Happy Thanksgiving Everybody!

  • I'm seeing a lot of good work out there this week. I did a short run yesterday when we got to Anchorage. The snow was pretty much gone but there were patches of compacted snow with water on top so I had to pay close attention to where I was running. I don't have any distance goals this week but I do have frequency goals so I went out this morning but there was black ice on the road so I came back in and had coffee and eggnog. Let the festivities begin!
  • Did my brick run today with friends for the annual Thanksgiving morning run. Didn't do the Z1.5 pace but did a little longer than prescribed so I figure it evens out.
  • Got up and did the bike workout and then headed to the local Turkey Trot without my kids who decided to sleep in. It was amazing to realize how fast I could run when slowing down meant being passed by a guy in a turkey suit...no way was that happening! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

  • @ Terry - Nice not letting the turkey catch you!

@ Mark - Nice to be safe!  I like the idea of focusing on frequency rather than distance while on the road.  I was in Anchorage 2 summers ago and loved running along that trail along the bay.  Is it dark all day this time of year.

Did my loop of the lake yesterday.  It was nice and easy until maybe the last mile.  Today's run was off the bike on the treadmill.  I am liking getting the short ones done at home on the TM.  Bonus, I got to watch the Lions win!

  • @ Brian. No the sun comes up around 10:30 and sets around 4. Susan and I went out for a walk around noon and there were still some black ice on the roads and both of us slipped a couple of times but we didn't fall. :-)
  • Nice run in the rain this morning. I've had a few rough weeks health wise, so nice to be out there running - thankful for that! My pace is finally back to more of my normal out of shape pace, not my sloth pace. Amazing what being healthy can do for running!
  • Happy Thanksgiving everyone!! My whole week flipped around by Turkey Trot/Family/Travel. Seems to be the recurring theme for a lot of us. I have had to bump things around considerably as well but happy that I will make my workouts/run mileage this week! I'm trying not to get frustrated by not having a garmin or good reliable source for recording my run data…YET!! Hopefully that will come by the end of the year (I've put in a request with the powers that be at the North Pole!!). The Turkey Trot Challenge was a lot of fun although I know I ran harder than i probably should have i just get SOOOOOOO caught up in the excitement!!! image I feel very fortunate….temps here in the 'Sip are stupid perfect…. mornings low 60s…..highs mid 70s. It was so beautiful yesterday I just couldn't bear to do my bike ride indoors so I just hopped on my fat tire bike (don't laugh…..it was so so so much fun) and found me a route with some good flat stretches around this beautiful reservoir/lake where I live and pounded those pedals. I got my time and basic effort in and the ride was good for the soul. Got to see a fantastic fall sunset as well. Those are my favorite workouts! image

Thanks Laura for the thread!! Everyone enjoy the weekend!! image
  • Worked Saturday's z2-z3 run late in the day and finished up around 6 pm. Temp on the track was a brisk 28 degrees.

    39' for 5 miles

12 hours later it back on the track for today's run. Temps a bit chillier 20 deg. Hand /foot warmers, a balaclava a headlamp and some tunes helped pass the time. After 2 miles I w as warmed up and ready for work. Instead of keeping to pace, I just ran the z4 miles by feel. It turned into more of a z5 pace and felt pretty great, so I just kept know going.

    3x1 mi@z1/2
    1x2 mi@ z5
    1 mi @ z3
  • I got an extra run in this week with the Thanksgiving Holiday time off of work.  This is the first time I have run 6 days in a week and almost 40 miles (38.3) in a long time.  Maybe since back when I ran open marathons.  It feels really good, but these legs are looking forward to an off day tomorrow along with some foam rolling.  Nice work everyone!

  • I did my longest run tonight since IMWI- 8.3 miles! I love running at night, even when I know its not the safest thing in the world. Tough pill to swallow that I'm running 8 miles at my IM pace, but consistency should help that come down.
  • Been battling a cold all week, but finally nearing the end today. Still, coughing during a run is not fun. Got the work done with runs Fri, Sat and Sun, as my Thanksgiving day became a down day due to family plans. Did brick runs on Friday (3.5 mi), and Sat (5 mi), with a stand alone 9 miler today. I did hit the target paces, but it was not easy with chest cold and  going Fri-Sat-Sun, instead of Fri off. I hope that despite a lack of higher end speed work in the first weeks of the OS, I may get some bump in vdot due to the legs just being more tuned to running. I am excited to see what this style of run endurance work will do for that.

  • Returned to marathon training with an easy 5 on Tuesday, a 5 mile brick @ 7:10 pace on Wednesday, intervals on Thursday (400 @ 6:06 + 800 @ 5:54 + 800 @ 5:52 + 800 @ 5:58 + 400 @ 5:38), finishing with the Mississippi Gulf Coast Half Marathon in 1:37:06 @ 7:25 on Saturday (6 minutes slower than PR).

Half was brutal as legs were lactic sore/fatigued from previous week of training and should have ran it @ 8:00 pace; but, once I got going just went with it.  Buuuuut, took rest of weekend off cycle training.

Did ride an easy 13.1 on my Yolo helping a friend company while she ultra-marathon trained after my half marathon and rode 7 this morning to keep another friend company while she did her Sunday morning run.  Maybe that counts for something, maybe.
