Yano's 2016 Season Plan

Thanks for getting my season plan back to me so fast.  Yes I have done IM AZ and know the course.  I listened to the podcast where you interview Turby and he did some Big Bike and Training weeks at weeks 8 through 5 for a bump in fitness. I recently sold my dental practice and I am now retired.  So I have some extra time on my hands.  I see you discouraged the IM AZ 70.3, but I was planning on going over to Tempe and do a camp situation several days before----swimming at LA Fitness in Tempe, bike the course and run and do the 70.3 race as the final day of camp. I thought that getting off the same training routes would give some mental stimulation.

Plus I was thinking of trying to do 3 70.3 races and accumulate enough points for AWA status.  I am doing CA 70.3 and was looking at CDA 70.3 on June 26 but lots of logistics. Santa Cruz 70.3 Sept 11 which I did last year and made for a nice trip.  Or Superfrog 70.3 on Sept 25th easy local race and flat bike like AZ.  The races help me to keep motivated since most of my training is on my own.  Looking at some local tri clubs to join.  Years ago we had a nice group of training partners that all trained together and pushed each other. Really help to motivate.

Another question.  I am breaking out the road bike for some winter miles in prep for TOC 2016.  What are your suggestions for how much riding on the road bike vs tri bike in early 2016 with IM CA 70.3 in early April.  After that it will be road bike for Bike Focus Plan in April and May.  Then transition to tri bike in the summer until IM AZ.  Would you recommend 1 day of big climbs like Palomar or Idylwild in January and February to get ready for TOC?

I don't know, I can think of MUCH better places to train, if I had a choice, vs Tempe, even if you are finishing with a HIM. Though I get the AWA points thing, etc. Sorry, I think I may just be emotionally scarred from having ridden moto support for the race the last 4-5yrs :-)

I recommend you put the road bike away Feb 1, ride the tri bike, then road bike until ToC, then whatever mix of road and tri bike you want to do until ~early Aug. Then it's back on the tri bike in advance of IMAZ. ToC hasn't published the actual routes so hard to say how much climbing will be on the route, but, as you know, big climbs can't hurt and are always a good idea. Go for it!
