pulled groin muscle

Hello Coach,
Just as I re-activated my account, I have pulled a muscle in my groin/lower abdomen. I managed to rally through my 5K run test this week, but it is painful just to get up from a chair, and sometimes simply walking. Running is stress on my lower abdomen, so I think I need to emphasize swimming and biking for the next few weeks, or use the elliptical, until I am healed. Bummer!
update: doctor says to mask the pain with acetaminophen untill healed. not much I can do to make it worse or better.

  • Glenn, how's it feeling now it's been a few days of no running?
  • It feels like I need at least a couple more days on the elliptical machine. It seems that all other exercises, including core routines, feel OK – but the bouncing of running is not OK. I don't look forward to long "runs" on a machine, but, just like on the spin bike, I have manny good podcasts to listen to! Hitting Z4 heart rate is nevertheless difficult on the elliptical, partly because the arm motion is completely unnatural.
Although the doctor said it's OK to "mask the pain with NSAIDs", I really don't like taking pain meds because I can't listen to my body that way.
  • Good call on the elliptical...better to play it safe here and you are staying fit even if you aren't building new fitness on the elliptical. So you are in a good place. When you are ready maybe you start working in a few minutes on the treadmill at the end of your elliptical sessions when you are warmed up, etc. Totally your call.

Are you doing any physical therapy on this?
