Craptastic December

Nov-December has been nasty. I added some body weight strength exercise (lunge, squat, pushup) to the run durability plan. Inspired by my late '15 season running performance, I also added some speed to my short runs (was averaging 7:30 pre-Austin 70.3, so bumped it to 7:10). The result of this combination is tendonitis of the R hamstring, sharp behind-the-knee pain laterally. I have put myself in run jail twice (4 and 5 days) and went back to slow jogs, but still cannot run more than a mile without un-ignorable pain. This i am sure has altered my gait, not sure if related, but I also have some plantar fascitis in the L foot now (first time ever). Working the lacrosse ball as I type. I can feel my weight going up (too afraid to jump on the scale), and I am sure I am taking a hit in the aerobic base department. Lastly, just had a vasectomy last Friday, so was in mandatory exercise jail for last few days.

ugh.

I am not going to be able to stick to the run durability at this point, I am looking for some form of routine I can do that is not painful. I can bicycle on the trainer consistently without hamstring pain, so I plan to make that a focal point. Once I get out of vasectomy jail I can swim. Not sure there is anything I can do about the run, which is nerve-racking considering the entire focus of the OS is run durability. Should I just stop running altogether for a long period of time? Walk? I have not been in this position before, sorry for the ignorance.

Thanks for any advice

  • Doug, not a coach and sorry to jump into the Micro, but I couldn't not say something. Do NOT jump in early with anything after your vasectomy. Take every single day off and follow the protocol that your doctor gave you. I'm a combat V vet myself and followed this advice, but many of my type A athlete / military friends did not and they all had bad experiences. Regardless of how good you feel (and regardless of the fitness you 'think' you are losing), don't jump back into training prior to your doctor's recommended recovery protocol.

Again, sorry for jumping into a micro, but I couldn't help myself. I have listened to way too many other dudes talk about bad outcomes. image
  • just to jump in myself.   doug is a urologist so hopefully knows how to do vasectomy recovery.   image     he actually did mine and i recovered in no time.
  • Just sayin'... That's kind of funny:-)
  • Doug, since everyone else is jumping in I will as well. I've been having hamstring problems off and on for years, when it flared up again this NOS I got a referral to a PT and I'm so glad I did. They diagnosed the underlying cause (weak glutes) and set me down a path to fix it. I was back running at TRP pace pretty quickly and last week I topped 30 miles for the week and that was less than 6 weeks after the recent flare up. You should be able to get a referral pretty easily I would think.
  • Great advice all. Doug, please remember the OS is bonus time...if you lose your bonus it's not the end of the world. Ignoring your hamstring and praying it gets better shortly isn't going to cut it for the rest of your season. Time to get the PT referral and at least get some personalized steps for treating what's going on -- could be the glutes for sure. Vasectomy takes time to get back on the bike, so do that right. Swimming is okay for fitness, as is water running I assume...but let's start the "right" work first there with self care...you should be back running in short order...
