wahoo kickr

This Christmas Santa may bring to my house a wahoo kickr. I currently use a cycleops mag trainer. Most of my riding is done indoors so the kickr may be the tool that will provide a bit more of a challenge in my training.

I use a Garmin 510 on my trainer and I was wondering if the 510 will be able to pick up the power readings off the kickr? I want to have my workouts downloaded into WKO where my training is mapped out for me. I don't get the "blue tooth or wiz bang tech talk" this wahoo kickr will do I'm just looking to plug into Trainer Road and have their programs give me a different training experience.

Does anybody have an opinion or have experience with this trainer?

  • @David- Yes, you'll be all set. The Kickr can transmit either ANT+ or Bluetooth. Your 510 will pickup the ANT+ signal just like it would any other power meter. And, the Kickr works great with Trainer Road too and will allow the changes in intervals to "send" the resistance changes to the Kickr while your riding. Easy to set up, even for the tech impaired like myself image
  • I have a kickr too!  BUT...I am super tech challenged.  Like, I should live in a Jane Austin book tech challenged!

So, I have used the kickr with trainer road.  Is ERG mode how the workout controls the power?  I've only used standard in the past.

Also, how can I get a specific bike course to ride on the kickr...as in IMOO.  I have ridden the computrainer in our LBS lab and love pre-riding my IM courses, but now I have this fancy (expensive) tool in my basement, but have no idea how to get what I want...the IMOO course in my legs!!! I sure do miss the days of an actual paper manual that I can read to learn about my new toys! Any idea how to get the ability to ride "other" courses on kickr???

  • yes, as below, output includes ant+.

I normally just use Wahoo app on my phone to control things.   Erg mode.     toggle up and down as needed.     quick and easy with no computer to mess with.         the phone then can easily upload to Trainingpeaks, Garmin Connect, etc.

  • Another satisfied Kickr user (with trainerroad on laptop, ERG mode) for almost all my rides. Very efficient & automatically syncs to trainingpeaks once you link accounts.

Trish, Others might have better options but the only way I have found to ride courses is via Strava Segments app on an ipad. I did this for IMLP and it was OK. DC Rainmaker review is below.

  • Ha haaa I love this place, you all are spot on with stuff I still don't quite understand in total, but the Kickr sounds like Santa may hit the nail on the head.
  • Also, if you are using TrainerRoad, you won't need your 510. TR can pick up all your sensors and then automatically upload the finished ride to TrainingPeaks. It's hard to beat TR and a Kickr, especially if you are syncing Sufferfest videos image
  • I love my Kickr, and double love it with Trainer Road via iPad or computer. I modify preset workouts via TR's Workout Creator.

@ Trish...I found "pre-riding" IM courses on a programmable trainer, like the KICKR, to be unnecessary and confusing, meaning it did not prepare me for race day. I spent $225 for the CompuTrainet videos of Kona, CDA, and AZ. i ended up using the AZ one a couple times, the others not at all. Theres no way to simulate the feeling of hills, wind or heat. And who wants to "simulate" a six (or even 3) hour ride on a trainer. Not me!

David ... I was up and riding with preprogrammed power on the KICKR less than ten minutes out of the box when I got mine for Christmas a year ago. It should be intuitive and easy. But if you have questions, post here, we'll talk you thru any thing you want to do. Trainer Road makes it a snap. It's almost idiot proof, as TR automatically picks up ANT+ signals from power sources, cadence, speed, HR as long as you have either Bluetooth or an ANT+/USB stick on your computer or mobile device. The free mobile app cuts out all the chaff on the website, if all you want to do is ride. Just remember to plug the dang thing into the outlet!
  • Love my Kickr + TR combo for training. You're riding will definitely benefit! My only issue has been the power reading. Kickr watts read about 20-25 watts higher than my Power2Max at any given time. Both our consistent, I just can't figure out which one is correct image
  • One can drive the Kickr with the power ouput from the crank power meter. See thw Wahoo app settings.
  • I was going to ride the trainer yesterday and my Garmin 510  lost its
software. So really not a big deal for the days workout and Trainer Road(TR)
holds my data. At the end of the ride I was looking over TR and I started to
play with the ride, I was able to save it to desktop then I opened WKO dragged
the ride into WKO and that worked! TSS , IF and the ride segments right were I
wanted them vs. creating a ride. Very cool I found something new.

I called the LBS and asked about a price for the Kickr and they said the 10
    speed is 1,099$.

  • David - TrainerRoad recently implemented a ride sync function, and it will automatically export your ride to TrainingPeaks (or Strava). If you are using the WKO software, and it syncs automatically with TrainingPeaks, you no longer need to download the ride and drag it into WKO. Ride Sync is in TrainerRoad under the Profile tab.
  • David,

I know very little about the Kickr units but did see an article on the new Kickr Snap on Slowtwitch which maybe a cheaper option and still functional for your use.   DC Rainmaker probably has a review as well.

Gordon, Thanks on the DC info I'm way ahead on looking up his review.

John, I'll have to look into that auto sync, Thx

  • Just got myself linked on Trainer Road! Yay! Now I will have a truer tsb.  Sweet!
