I got seasick...in a POND

Yeah, any fool can get seasick in the sea...it takes a special gift to get seasick in a pond.   And if I can find the effin' receipt, I'm returning that gift for a refund!

Did my first-ever open-water swim this afternoon, about a mile total distance.  (Yes, I am that noobish.)  The actual swimming was SO easy and stress-free I felt like I could go on forever - but whenever I stopped, I felt slightly dizzy and nauseous.  By the time we finished and got out of the water, I was over the edge into full-blown retching.  Now, I know I get seasick, I used to have problems with it when scuba-diving, but that was in the choppy ocean, bobbing up and down either on the boat or in the water waiting to be picked up.  But apparently all it takes is the slight motion of water in a pond to set it off.

Hopefully a pre-race Bonine and wearing Accubands will be enought to ward it off.  Otherwise, I may have to shelve those Kona plans

On the bright side, major props to De Soto for the T1 First Wave.  The suit didn't restrict my stroke at all - I might as well have been swimming in nothing but a Speedo - well, other than the warmth and the bouyancy!

  • Do you wear ear plugs? I had similar issues even in the pool. Overtime it got better, but the earplugs really helped. Just a thought. Good luck!

  • Aaron,

Thank you.  I just googled "open water swim dizziness," and by far the biggest recommendation for dizziness and nausea was earplugs.  So I will go back to the pond with some earplugs before race day, and hopefully they will be the cure.

  • Also try with pulling your swim cap over your ears.

Good luck and let us know

  • I went back to the pond today, with earplugs this time, and they fixed the problem 100%.  I never knew that cold water on the eardrums could cause such dizziness and nausea.  How did I manage to miss that vital tidbit of triathlon wisdom?

  • I appreciate you missing it! I had a short cold water swim ( my first ever) and felt that way a little bit but blew it off. Now thanks to you come raceday I will know to try ear plugs! thanks you might of saved my race too!
  • For some folks cold water on the eardrum can give them vertigo and make them dizzy. There are some ENT docs in da Haus who can give a more thorough explanation. Glad your problem is solved---now time for Kona, right?!image
