Jenn Eckert - 2016 Micro thread

Hi Coach P, Just watched the video regarding the long run and extending it.  I did 8.8 miles yesterday in 1:30.  That was with the faster 400's (9:08 pace).  I've been adding 10-15 minutes to my shorter runs and if I feel okay I add a bit of time to the longer runs, but I'm still not hitting my weekly goals.   I do have a 1/2 Marathon on the schedule but it's not til 3/13.  If I did one within 2-3 weeks of the end of outseason, it would give me 4-6 weeks between.  Should I look for another 1/2 to do at the end of OS or just stick with the Shamrock on 3/13?  I'm game for either.

I also walk about 1 1/2 to 2 miles every day with my dog.  My husband Mike used to do it, but since his neck fracture he hasn't been given the okay to walk the dog yet.  So after my workouts I come home and get them both and we head out for a walk.  Can I count those miles???

Thanks!

  • JE, yes to counting puppy miles. I love it...and it adds to durability. Personally I would walk the dog as my warm up too sometimes...but your call.

Don't worry about hitting the targets, you are doing all the right stuff with the modifications. What I am looking for is that you are incrementally moving those numbers up each week...or holding steady as a minimum. Stacking those weeks back to back to back is what makes your run awesome.

    Keep it up!
  • Thanks...what about looking for an earlier 1/2 Marathon (I'm signed up for one on 3/13, but you indicated in your podcast about doing one 1-2 weeks post end of OS).... Should I look for another 1/2 to do at the end of OS or just stick with the Shamrock on 3/13?  I'm game for either.

  • JE, no worries on the half. I am okay with it as you are in the Get Fast plan at that point. So maybe look to do a 10k if that's easier at the end of the OS. Like the Escape for Folsom 5k? http://www.active.com/running/granite-bay-ca/escape-from-folsom-10-miler-and-5k-2016?cmp=39-20

    I am onto you!!!!
  • Sounds like a plan! I got into triathlon because of TBF.
  • Hi Coach''s"; I'm just exiting the Get Faster Training Plan and it's a test week. I drop into the HIM plan next week and there is a test week again one week later. I don't believe you intend for me to do both. Should I test now and not in 2 weeks?

I'm also looking at an International on 5/15. There is a Race rehearsal the weekend prior, and a test week following. Should I modify or just stick with the same plan? Thanks for your help!
  • JE, good catch! Test now and for the HIM, just do the "not testing" workouts!

Keeping the RR is fine, but you could probably modify race week by:

    - Regular sessions end with Thursday
    - Friday is swim only
    - Saturday is easy aerobic bike, not hard, like 90 minutes.
    - Sunday is crush the race, use those values as test indicators.
    - Monday is swim only
    - Tuesday back at it!

    What say you?
  • So, for the "not testing" workouts...just do the time/steady type pace for all workouts....?

And On the race week...end it with a 2 hour run on Thursday?  My schedule says 2 hr run Thurs/ Swim on Friday/ Bike on Sat.  So no days off before race??

  • JE, usually on the test session days there's an "if you aren't testing workout" listed. If not, then you can do:

    SWIM - 5 x 200 on 20" rest.
    RUN - 2 x 1 mile @ Z4.
    BIKE - 2 x 15' @ Z4

For the run day...we need that long run that week..you COULD put that Wed and ride Thu if you are really worried...or split the Thu Run into Am/Pm...let me know what you are thinking. As for a day off, if you feel like you really need one you could drop the Friday swim and either move the bike there (for a Sat off), or keep the bike on Sat after your rest on Friday.

    LOTS of flexibility.
  • Thanks Patrick.  I think I will switch the long run day to Wednesday and do the bike on Thurs.  And then take Sat off.  I'm curious to see how the AM/PM runs coming up go.  If they work for me, I may try that the Thursday before the race.  I find as I get older...I need a little bit more rest.  I'm bushed today from a 64 mile ride yesterday on the Vineman course in Napa area!  The road surface was no bueno!!
