Cervelo R2 or R3?

trying to finalize a road bike purchase from local bike shop. trying to stay south of 3K. I really want / need a lower end cost power meter like Stages or Rotor Max2. I can get an R3 with rotor cranks ultegra but that will hit right at 2800 so I will have to wait on power meter.  Or I can get an R2 for 2K but 105 components with standard FSA cranks.  I could then upgrade to a 105 crankset but then add a stages power meter and stay under 3K.  I admittedly don't know gobs about bikes.  I will not race the bike but will use it as supplement to training.  Any advice is appreciated.  Thanks

  • The real world difference between those two bikes is negligible.
I recommend getting the R2 + power meter.
The power meter is an indispensable tool that will buy you many minutes on the bike course.
The R3 might buy you 5 seconds.
It's all about the engine...and you are the engine and that power meter is your gauge cluster!
  • @Charlie , the number one thing is to make sure the bike fits and everything else is secondary... X2 what Don said , about getting the R2 w/power over the R3.... Why not the S2? Stages makes a PM compatible with FSA cranks now , so there is no need to upgrade the crank to add the PM...

FWIW we have a S3 and S5 in the house and I am pretty sure I like the S3 better! They are all nice choices.
