Question for 4:50 - 5 hr Half IM'ers

Hello.  My goal for CDA 70.3 is sub 5 hrs.

For those of you who race between 4:50-5 hrs for a Half IM, I'm wondering what your Olympic Distance times are?  And what your Half IM splits for S,B,R are?

Thanks!

  • HIM S/B/R: 32'/2h36'/1'36 TTl 4h48 with T1 and T2
    OD S/B/R: 25'/1h02/42' TTL 2h12 with T1 and T2
  • I typically finish in that 4:45-5:00 range and am fairly balanced in all three disciplines (i.e., no weakness, no strength).

HIM: swim :30-33, bike 2:28-35, run 1:37-40, top 2% in transitions (ok, transition is a strength)

Oly's aren't really my thing, but I think: swim :21-24, bike 1:02-08, run :42-45.. Finish somewhere in the 2:teens.

If you're on the cusp, course and weather are key considerations. Quassy and St. George aren't good targets. Think Racine, Steelhead, Florida, Augusta, Boulder, Texas, etc. Miami is flat, but it sucks.
  • Hi Lance,

I've done 4:43 on a flatish course (Pumpkinman in Maine) and 5:03 on a hilly course (Quassy). My Quassy splits were 35/2:49/1:36.

Typical flatish Olympic splits are 25/1:01/43-44 for ~2:15. Hope that helps!

  • Thanks for the replies. It's does help.
  • In 2011 I was 4:48 at Racine as my first half-iron and 2:15:16 in an Olympic-distance race the month before. I am a LOT better at longer-distance racing so I'll bet there are a lot of sub-5 half-iron athletes in the 2:20 range for an Olympic-distance.
