Dave, 1. It will be hot. 2. It will be windy. 3. The water could be rough but probably drifting in your favor. 4. There will be stories and some probably true about GI bugs, food poisoning , etc after the race.
Its not as hard getting there as you might expect. Lots of cheap places to stay if you dont need much. Actually was a pretty inexpensive race for me compared to some others. The swim truly is spectacular like KONA spectacular. The bike gets a bit old by the 3rd lap and if there is still that 8-10mile section of rough pavement that takes its toll on the feet.... NO comment on the run as I did not even complete one lap of it on raceday... However I did ride the run course and it looks great... For someone like you, who does pretty well in the heat (KONA conditions) , flat bike windy bike will play to your absolute power and ability to stay aero, I think its a great course for YOU! I'd like to go back there one day and if I was 100% right now you could probably suck me into it but I have to get better and think about earlier races I already signed up for first!
Paul Hough did it 2 years in a row... Better source than I ....
1. Hands down, my family's favorite race. They would like me to go back. 2. Cozumel Palace is THE best situated place. Fantastic and also explains #1 above. 3. Biking on the east side of the island can be brutal resulting in lots of drafting. 4. Very well supported run course with aid stations about every 1K. You could get fat if you stopped at every one.
I did the 70.3 there this year, which uses most of the same course/facilities, so here's my $0.02 FWIW
1 - Hot/bugs/sun/wind - it's a jungle island; what do you expect? 2 - Agree Cozumel Palace is a great choice, but there are plenty of good choices proximate to T2/finish 3 - East side is windy and exposed, and there's a ton of drafting on that side, which didn't seem to have as many marshals 4 - Aid stations galore on both the bike and run. Every 10k on the bike and 1k on the run. Taking ice at each run one worked well for me.
Again, that's the 70.3 experience, but it's pretty similar I understand.
1) My favorite swim venue of any triathlon I have ever done (including Kona), but I was promised a down current swim and it didn't happen on our day.
2) Bike is WINDY, sunny, flat and hot. 3 things that don't particularly suit my strengths, but probably do suit yours. Totally cooked my quads...
3) Run was also flat and reasonably hot, but wasn't as hot as Kona/IMNYC/IMLou/IMFL for me. Well supported 3 loop course with lots of local support and action.
I really liked the venue and the race and it would be a fun family location (I went by myself). But I likely won't go back because I'll be looking to avoid flat bike courses if possible in the future.
