James Marsh - Vineman 2016 Plan

Hey Coach Rich -

Just getting ramped up here. Ton of information on the site. A few questions:

1) what HR number do you want when determine my zones for the bike? i took a 20 minute FTP test on my Kickr using TrainerRoad. i took the average HR over the actual 20 minute test. that's the right one, correct?

2) Do you guys recommend one training software over another? I use Garmin devices so use Connect. It also uploads to Strava, which I find convenient and social. I used TrainingPeaks with a bike coach a while back, found it had lots of functionality but a little less user friendly.

3) why is there nothing on your site regarding the Vineman Ironman?! That's my A race.

thanks, look  forward to working with you.

Yes, that will work.

    2) Do you guys recommend one training software over another? I use Garmin devices so use Connect. It also uploads to Strava, which I find convenient and social. I used TrainingPeaks with a bike coach a while back, found it had lots of functionality but a little less user friendly. Many of us use Garmin, which is downloaded by Garmin Express and then pushed into Garmin Connect (I never use this) and TrainingPeaks (if you want analyze it more) and Strava (for fun, accountability). Others will also push it into WKO4, though I haven't set this up yet.

    3) why is there nothing on your site regarding the Vineman Ironman?! That's my A race. Because the race hasn't been held yet?? I know Vineman has been around for a while but over the years we've only had a handful of members race it. You can probably search the forums for Vineman race reports.

thanks, look  forward to working with you.

  • thanks. that's helpful.

is there a way to integrate TrainerRoad into my training plan (at least during the winter)? it would be great if the bike training workout you assign me largely mimicked one of their existing workouts. for example, my next bike workout is 2 x 12' (4') @ 95-100% and i am sure there is existing workout that looks like that one (like Kaweah but shorter). i have my bike on a Wahoo Kickr along with TrainerRoad and it is outstanding - so effective and simple. let me know your thoughts. i can probably poll some other tri folks and see what people are doing.

re the Vineman, I just thought there might be a group up.

    thanks for the quick response.
  • Hi James, I know this is your macro thread, but I've done Vineman 4 times and would be happy to share what I know about the race and the course.

All of our OutSeason bike workouts are in Trainerroad. Please click on the red Help button in the lower right of your screen to send an email to Anne. She'll get you setup.

  • Thanks Mark. Appreciate it. Any particular hotel you recommend? Any other logistical issues I should be thinking about?

  • We always stayed in houses  so I can't recommend any hotels. We like houses because our kids usually went with us and since they were older they could stay there during the race. Plus we had a full kitchen and could prepare our own food. We always stayed in Guerneville and usually within walking distance to the start. Guerneville gets really busy on race morning and it's difficult to get into town and find a parking spot, so being able to walk in makes things much less stressful. They have a shuttle bus to take you back to Guerneville after the race if you need that. We used Russian River Rentals to book houses. In particular we stayed at Olive Cottage twice. It was nice and quiet, close in, and had room to lay out all our tri gear (my wife also did them).
  • Coach Rich -

I had call with Coach P and thought the Quassy half distance might be a good training opportunity for me. It's the first week of June. How does that impact my plan? Can we incorporate it into my training plan? Would this take the place of "First Race Rehearsal - High Volume" weekend on 6/20? I have a college reunion and family reunion the weekends of June 18th and 25th. I will be able to do some training around those weekends but might get a little complicated.
  • Coach Rich -
A few of items to consider...
    1) the ball of my foot feels better, so starting to do longer outdoor runs again
    2) I cancelled the New York Half Marathon due to foot injury
    3) I am moving to California March 21. So might make training a little erratic. Moving, planes, etc.
    4) I signed up for the Malibu Triathlon in Sep with my new employer (Olympic distance)
  • Oh, and I almost forgot...

I signed up for Tour of California Bike Camp, so should I be adjusting my training in any way to be better prepared for that?
  • Hey Coach -
was hoping to reconnect on my training plan. I have been largely off-plan since I moved to Santa Monica. I noticed that I was -3 weeks into my Outseason plan so need to adjust that, but not sure with what?!
Almost all of my data is on TrainingPeaks, but I have generally doing some longer rides (50-60) and long runs (10-14) on the weekends. Doing 3x relatively hard 'spin' classes at TriFitLA, some core classes there, and swimming for an hour with TriFitLAs swim coach on Monday and Friday mornings. I feel very fit and am at my race weight (165). I would love to customize my plan to fit the TriFitLA classes/workouts as it is very convenient for me (I am a 3 min walk to their facility) and it helps make up for the flights back to CT every other weekend to see kids (ex wife is still in CT).

    Hi James,

Per your Triathlon Season Roadmap here, you should be in the EN*Full plan. Please load that up now per the instructions on your TSR page. Check out where the swims are in that EN*Full plan and let me know if you'll have any problems moving the swims days in the plan to the swim days of your organized swim workout.

  • James-I just heard that per the Updated Event Schedule on 5/17 showing Saturday 4am, Athlete Shuttle Buses to Swim Start from Windsor High School. So there might be hotels in Windsor CA.
  • Thanks Stephanie. Super helpful. But 4AM sounds pretty early image
