Wahoo Kickr

I bought a new inside trainer the Wahoo Kickr. As with something new there is the LEARNING curve that to me is a PITA. SO, The cadence sensor doesn't want to work with TR nor my 510 Edge. LBS is sending me a new one so that for a later discussion.

I can't get my 510 Edge to pair with the Kickr.. I power both the Kickr and the Edge on. On the Edge at the very top I tap it which brings me to the bike sensors icon. I tap the power sensor, the enable portion is on, I hit search and it doesn't find the Kickr. Does anyone have an idea other than what I'm trying?

  • Thx Jamie,

I did try that but it didn't work either and I don't know the ID of the Kickr to manually enter it I'll have to work on it.

  • @David- I have a Kickr as well, but have it paired with a Garmin 500, garmin 910xt, as well as trainer road, etc. I assume that you are using a mobile device with the Kickr? If so, did you download the Wahoo apps and is power showing up on those apps? If power is not showing up anywhere, try unplugging the Kickr for 10 seconds and plugging it back in. If it is just your garmin that cannot pick it up, I suggest calling Garmin customer service...

    Thx Brad,

I too have a 510 and 910x and haven't been able to pair either with my Kickr. I did download the Kickr apps and updated the firmware. I'm using Trainer Road for my programs right now and power is being read via Ant but not the RPM sensor. TR seems not to support that sensor but I downloaded the new version of TR yesterday and I'll give it a shot again tomorrow.

  • I don't know.

I assume in the short term you know you can just cycle by controlling the Kickr from your smart phone with Wahoo app thru Bluetooth.     just use the Erg mode.

the Kickr broadcasts in Bluetooth and ANT+.      I don't know why your Garmin is not picking it up.       I usually only use my Garmin 500 indoors to make sure my crank Quarq output is somewhere near the output of the Kickr.

On my road bike that I have set up currently I just use the Wahoo app and Erg mode.     my cadence comes from crank Stages that broadcast in Bluetooth.

This AM I had some time left over before work and was able to pair my 510 Garmin with my Kickr. I'm not concerned about the 910x so much. I did downloaded the Wahoo Fitness App you were speaking about, its home page shows, 4 week summary at that point I click on biking which shows cadence, HR, Speed, wko time/distance without power display nothing about ERG mode. Learn me up Robin.

Never mind I just found I wasn't set for indoor cycling.

  • David, sounds like you may have it all worked out? I use the Kickr and my 510, as well as Trainer Road on my iPad. I have my HR and cadence showing on the 510, as well as power. I don't have the HR and cadence showing on my iPad though. Haven't figured that out yet. I think I need an ANT stick, which doesn't work in the iPad. ??? Anyway, I have all my numbers so I'm good:-) Hope you figured it all out! Darn gadgets!

Here's how to get the Wahoo Ant+ stick to work with the iPad. In the photo below, the black thing is the Wahoo ANT+ stick (http://www.amazon.com/Wahoo-Fitness-Key-iPod-iPhone/dp/B0042WGO3Y), which will fit into older model iPads; the white thing is an adaptor sold by Apple which will plug into newer model iPads.

  • Hi Carol, Are you using the Wahoo RPM sensor for cadence or the older cadence sensor on the crank arm that pass a magnet as you pedal ?

  • Hi David. I'm using the Garmin cadence sensor on the crank arm, but it doesn't use a magnet.
  • Time for a revisit on this thread.

On my phone a Galaxy S6 Android the Wahoo Kickr app only picks up power and I am not able to control the resistance, all the other blocks on the training page doesn't show either, cadence, HR, distance, etc, ect.

When I plug in a workout off TR the power, wattage is so easy that I suspect the reading to be off 20-50 watts, I know I'm not that fit as I know the RPE for that kind of power. I have updated firmware and have done spindowns. I don't know what else to do. To get a good workout I put the TR in standard mode with a 2-3 resistance to make it feel like a workout. I'm working with my LBS on this issue too however their communication with Wahoo is email and I'm getting nowhere fast.

    Any suggestions?

  • David - when I started using my KICKR with Trainer Road a year ago, I discovered my FTP was 15% higher than it had been when using the ComputTrainer, and 12% higher than my outdoor FTP - this was all on the same bike, comparing the KICKR to my PowerTap hub.

I never try to reconcile all those discrepancies, I just use the FTP which fits the system I'm working on. EG, for me, I do FTP intervals @ 240 on the Kickr, and @ 205 on the CT, and 212 outside, and it all feels "the same".

  •

Thx Al, I get it now. My FTP outside is about 10 watts higher than my inside training with my Cyclops trainer and I make that adjustment accordingly. I will have to do the same with the Kickr albeit I thought spending all that money on a trainer it would not have that much of a discrepancy.

I do find taking the Kickr out of EGR mode and putting it in Standard Mode, level 0 or 2 it mimics a fluid trainer, the ride is choppy in the display on TR but it feels like work. I guess if I set TR FTP up 10%-20% I could use the EGR mode so I wouldn't have to shift gears. The only thing that bothers me is the TSS score, it is false correct? I download the ride into WKO+. At the end of the week I would have a much higher TSS right?

  • regarding not being able to control your Kickr from your phone through the Wahoo Fitness app:::  that is a bummer because that is my goto simple setup.     Erg mode and go.     I have latest generation iPhone.                download the Wahoo Utility app.        this allows you to test your Bluetooth connectivity.          Also check to make sure you have the latest Kickr firmware update - you can only do this through latest Bluetooth device.

regarding the difference in wattage:       mine is pretty close to my crank based Quarq and Stages.          if you have crank/pedal based power meter, you can set Wahoo Fitness to drive your workout by the watts put out by your power meter and not what the Kickr thinks it is putting out.

When I ride with my KICKR, I adjust my FTP in WKO to reflect that. I track the workout on my Garmin Fenix watch, and load that file into WKO.
