How to manage workouts while on vacation

I am taking a 4 day ski vacation three weeks prior to my marathon. I have high hopes for the race (BQ). I have access to a treadmill during the trip, but I am an avid and aggressive skier. I have a long run prior to leaving and one when I get back. Those are not the problem. I also have some longer workouts while there. I plan to do them. My question is with the shorter runs, the 35 min at zone 1 with 6 strides sort. Should I still do those, or consider time skiing as time served? Should I change my more aggressive workouts? It will be week 21 of the 24 week Advanced Marathon plan.

  • Spencer, I know you've been training hard, so I don't see the upside of worrying about the shorter runs. I say you dedicate the "non-essential" run days to some serious flexibility work and maybe even some core. 30 to 45 mins of stretching for a few days, partly as skiing recovery, will really help you as you absorb that activity but prepare for the final few weeks into your race.

Now, if you go off and eat a gajillion calories in one sitting that advice might change...but as long as you pretty good in the food department you should be okay!!!
