cda up to 65 slots.

so the turkey butts at Ironman are messing around again.         more slots just added to Ironman Idaho, 65 slots total.

i am signed up for Canada with 40 slots.

i have about an equal chance on each based on past performances and the courses, given an equal number of slots.        if Ironman had given us this info months ago i probably would have skipped Canada.

So I guess my main decision is to whether I should give big cash to reserve CDA in case bad luck takes me out of Canada.

  • Can you transfer your race to CDA?
  • Robin - this makes our collective heads hurt! Do you really think CDA is at risk of selling out tho? Any way to keep track?

Can you transfer your race to CDA?

As I read the transfer policy, you *could* transfer from Canada to CdA. http://www.ironman.com/triathlon/events/north-american-ironman-transfer-pilot-program.aspx#axzz3zd7LFi8M

If I were Robin, I would do the transfer, skip Canada. I think's he's got a better chance @ Kona in Idaho.

I am SO glad that, being 65+ (where its "win or go home"), this in no way alters my determination to wait until Chattanooga at the earliest to do another Ironman. But if I were in a younger age group ...

  • Yes my head hurts now ! That is what i get fot asking. image

Slots may sell out ??? I may suck it up and buy an entry rather than transferring. For back up if i have to skip Canada due to illness.

Though cda may fill up with fast folks ??? And some fast folks will transfer from canada to cda ???

Jenivere, going to stack up another race ?

  • So if i buy a cda entry:::: If i qualify in canada, could i transfer my cda slot to kona ???
  • Hey Robin,

I'm with you.  When I saw them throw 65 slots at CdA, with only 30 at IMNC (the race I'm signed up for), I had a brief "you gotta be sh!tting me?" moment.  With 30, we'll be very lucky to get 2, maybe 3 slots in my AG whereas there will likely be 6-7 at CdA. Here's how I would look at it: how many top (sub-10) guys in your AG are currently signed up for Canada or Boulder and are having this very same conversation?  If 10 studs transfer to CdA and stack the front end of your AG, the extra slots may be meaningless.  But if 5 of those 10 transfers come from Canada, that may actually give you a better shot at Canada. It's a complete crap shoot/roll of the dice.  But recent history shows that the top end (15-20 deep) of every age group was very fast at Canada (when they had 75 or so slots), MT (when it was the NA Champs) and TX (as the current NA Champs). If I were a betting man, I would guess that there will be a slew of "elite AG" transfers to CdA.

If you plan to do both Canada and CdA, do you really think you can recover from the former and put forth a KQ effort at the latter with only 4 weeks rest?  If so, give IM a call (they're east coast) and see if you can transfer CdA to Kona if you KQ at Canada. They were quite nice when I dealt with them during my trx from Louisville.  813.868.3186

No. When I KQ'd @ AZ '14, I looked into that, to transfer my LP,slot to Kona. Specifically proscribed in the transfer policy. See rule #9:

  • Hey Robin,

I may just do that.  I'm doing Texas for sure.  If I don't qualify there, yes to Canada as it suits me, I'm the RTB camp coach, etc.  I'd always had CDA as a "Hail Mary" - now it's just a more attractive one. Who knows, maybe CDA will pull so many from the PNW that IMC becomes less competitive.  I'm not gonna try to over think it too much.  After a couple of years of the double it doesn't scare me.  I actually think it forces me to rest so I end up coming in with a better taper but who knows.   Would love to see you at any or all!

  • One other thought...CdA is @ the tail end of the qualifying season. Those "elite AGers" using it as a "safe school" have a fair shot @ being already qualified, and passing on their slot. But still racing to go after AWAGold status. You need three races to have a legitimate shot @ that.
  • Hey Al,

Thanks for the thoughts.  To clarify: I'm AWA Gold and only have the two 5th place finishes. Is that what you mean? I honestly don't know the math that they do for those bronze, silver, gold, etc.   Maybe it gets harder in smaller age groups?  I just squeaked in... FWIW.

  • Jenn - I think you're right - I wrote without checking. EG, in the 40-44 men and women, world IM ranking, it took about 9000 pts for gold. In my AG, it took about 11,000, and for the women 65-69, Sandi Weibe's (who is most assuredly a world class athlete) 13,946 netted her 2nd place - and silver ranking!

  • Sometimes I think it might be a better strategy to just wait and sign up for whatever race they throw additional slots at since it seems to happen every year. Too bad my schedule always seems to be pretty well locked more than a year in advance.
  • thanks all for the thoughts.

leaning towards buying a cda entry regardless.     will decide this week.

would like to race with you Jen but just do it in texas.

my training has been off/on due to illnesses recently.          so if I am not trained enough for Canada, I could drop that and do cda.     and if accidents prevent Canada, cda as back-up.

regarding doing Canada AND cda, yes I have had good racing with short turn around.         anyhow, current plan probably to focus on Canada and deal with other options if needed.

  • Guess what popped up on my Facebook feed tonight...literally right after I booked my airfare to Zurich? IM Switzerland just increased their 2016 slots from 40 to 65 in celebration of their 2oth anniversary. This might mean 2 instead of 1 for my age group, but at 59, I am at the wrong end and do not expect this to do anything for me.
  • Cool pAul. I should have gone to die Schweitz.
