What Tim said for testing. For training, I went back and forth, but I found that I preferred ERG mode for the interval and I would switch to slope mode for the recovery interval. I would hit F2 on the controller and adjust the slop down and then go back to ERG about 10 to 20 seconds before the next interval. Also, you can keep your chain in a middle gear and let the Computrainer do the adjusting. The only downside was I would drift off occasionally and my cadence would lower. The Computrainer in ERG mode will increase tension if you lower cadence. It would take a lot of effort to get my cadence back up.
I know some of the November Outseason peeps would also adjust the Trainer road setting and add a percentage or two to the workout each week as they adjusted to their new FTP.
