Disc at IMTX?

Hi all - IMTX 2016 will be my fourth Texas IM, I am looking for any thoughts on wheel choice for this year.

My first IMTX I used the stock wheels on my P3, in 2014 I upgraded to a 404FW/808RW set up. That was a huge improvement but in Teas in 2015 I hit the cross winds harder than I expected. For 2016's season I am looking to move to a disc rear and maybe a 808 front, or a disc rear and stick with the 404 front.

Is anyone else planning to ride a disc wheel at IMTX 2016, or have any of you used a disc in Texas previously - especially in 2015. If so did you encounter any cross wind issues? Any views on if a rear disc works better or no difference whether the front is a 404 or 808?

Thanks all

  • I've used a disc cover from WheelBuilder every year at Texas. No issues and this will my 6th time there.
  • Use the disc and a 404 if you are concerned about crosswinds. It is the depth of the front, not the rear wheel that pulls when there is a cross wind. There is a myth out there that you shouldn't use a disc in high winds but it is crosswinds where discs have a sail effect. I haven't done Texas yet, but if/when I do, I would go deep front and rear.
  • Paul nailed it....It's the depth of the front wheel that makes things twitchy.  You're fine running a disc and if you have concerns about handling a 404 upfront should be fine.  I don't think you are giving up anything with the 404.  In fact you may gain simply from being more confident in your ability to handle any gusts that do happen to occur.

  • Thanks all - the cross winds were a surprise in 2015. I expected the head winds but not the cross. I hadn't considered the sail effect of a disc with cross winds so I'll think about that too. Plus, sticking with my existing 404 front will save cash too.
