etap conversion.

one of the first in the country to get the etap aero conversion kit.      from Texas Cyclesports.          $1500+.           pretty much everything you need is in the kit except BlipGrips.

have the basic conversion done.     seems to be working fine indoors so far.

just follow the sram Youtube video for setup.    make sure to follow this carefully.

is freeing to get rid of cables.

still thinking about the final position of the BlipBox.      my between the arm bottle holder is in the way.     currently I have it mounted under the bottle holder.     I might mount the BlipBox so I can see from above though.     if the Blips stop functioning, one can shift right from the BlipBox, if needed as last resort.        the BlipGrips make the aero extension Blip install very slick.        will be putting another set of blips somewhere next the brake levers.             the BlipClamps are too wide for use here (meant for road handlebars).

older model Cannondale Slice.      converted my Flo hub to 11 speed.   11-28.

front chainrings:::  using my compact Quarq.      left the 34.   50 is now a 52.          so basically I am ready for all types of courses, flat or hilly.       not sure if the front derailleur is meant to handle the 34 to 52 gap (versus 36 to 52 or whatever), but with some fiddling seems to work ok.    totally removed the lower limit screw.    fine tuning of the upper limit screw is the key.   will let you know if I have shifting problems on the open road.           I did change to 11 speed chainrings but I think the older 10 speed chainrings would work fine.

very slick function that make it easy to tweak the rear derailleur shifting.

  • This is great info!

I am about to place an order to build a bike that will incorporate SRAM components and eTAP as well.  Any advice for someone who has a chance to order everything up front and deciding to go with eTAP?

  • Robin - thanks for the update. The SRAM aero upgrade is absolutely on my list. < $1600 is a great price to enter the electronic shifting game.

Did you you to purchase a new cassette? I've heard the etap only works with a certain range of cassettes.
  • make sure to follow the sram install video.

order soon.   it may be too late to get within two months.        note there are conversion kits and full groupset kits.

I probably would get all my future road or triathlon bikes with etap.

note for tri bike, one gets Blip Box and four Blips.      for road bike, one gets Shifters with optional add-on of Blips.

will make disassembly for traveling easy.

cassettes::::  it seems to work outside fine with a lower end sram cassette.     I have a medium end one on order.     11-28 is the max rating for the thing, I believe.       there are always problems putting my bikes on the Kickr trainer - always have to tweak the barrel adjuster.   the Kickr spacing is a bit different.      the Kickr seemed more finicky with a Shimano cassette - improved with Sram cassette.      on all my road and tri bikes I have a mixure of sram and shimano components.     With Etap, seems it might be best to stick with mostly Sram components.

  • I confirmed the rear dérailleur is a short cage. As you mention it cannot handle anything in excess of a 28 cog. The $1500+ is for the aero conversion kit - not a bad spend.
