TSR adjustment

Coach R,

Just coming off 2.5 weeks of a complete shut down, working with Coach P on a re-entry plan. I had an excellent base before the knee injury.

I was scheduled to finish the OS and do a half marathon on 4/10. I wiped that plan. If re-entry goes well, I should be ready to increase volumes at the end of april.

Do you recommend a different TSR en route to victoria70.3 6/12 and IM Whistler 7/24, or should I jump into the IM plan once I am sure the knee is good?

Thank you,

DS

    Hey Doug,

I'd like you to load up the IM plan as scheduled and then work with Patrick, if you need to, to make modifications to that as your knee comes along. Your goal is IMCA, with Victoria simply another race in route to that. As such, the IM drives the train as to what training plan you should be doing.

  • Coach R,

As I get ready to build for IMAZ I just finalized a home schedule that will basically make it close to impossible to hit the pool Mon-Friday (I had to give up my mornings, combo of SAUs and legal responsibilities associated with owning kids). I might be able to sneak some seriously short sessions (like 30 minutes) at lunch, but with local pool schedules being what they are, and my work life being what it is, I am looking at weekend swim time. The flip side of this decision is that I can be in the pain cave every am. Short of using Sarner's vasa at night, do you have any advice?

It's not ideal but it is what it is. I think you may need to make it a priority to get to the pool on the weekends, likely in the evenings, after your long ride sessions? Don't know if that's even possible given whatever weekend family commitments you have. And I can tell you it's extremely tough to motivate to swim 45-60' later in the day after a 4-5hr ride.

If you have access to a Vasa trainer, that would be great. If not, you could do stretch cords a few times per week to work on your swimming specific strength (sorta)

  • I am toying with the idea of running M-F, then aqua biking the weekend, forgoing the typical Saturday brick. That would in theory get me two quality swims per week. The alternative I guess would be to accept very short sessions in the pool (20-40 minutes, during lunch breaks). The problem will be these sessions will be less than predictable, basically will be stealing time as I drive by the pool. This sessions may be of low value due to pool schedules/full lanes.

Given your circumstances I think doing aquabike on the weekend is a good alternative. As for bricks, highly recommend you do the RR bricks in wks15 and 18, other than that I think you'll be fine. Good luck!
