Bike Insurance

Looking for recommendations on bike insurance - I just bought my first tri-bike and wallet is a LOT thinner

Some people I have talked to say home owners insurance will not cover, especially when traveling.

Any thoughts on best insurance co?

Thanks,

BK

Brian - depends what you are looking for. If you are looking for protection against theft and damage of your bike outside of your home - you will need to raise a personal artical policy to acquire said protection. A personal artical policy will protect your investment at the replacement value, if it is written per your needs.

Kindly note, most insurance companies will not insure a bike which is utilized for racing. So please make sure you respond accordingly when they ask.
  • Don't know if I was lucky or what...but my house insurance didn't blink an eye when we did. But of course, all it's insured against is theft and damage related to housing things. Honestly, I wouldn't expect them to pay for race-induced damage. I just treated it like insuring anything else expensive (jewelry, etc, not that I have that), for which you need a rider.
  • I did insure my bike one year separately through a third party insurance company (Markel bicycle insurance) which specializes in bicycle insurance when I was traveling with it abroad. It covered everything from crash during racing to theft. I didn't renew after that year because the cost of the insurance was about 8% of the value of the bike. There is a point where you have to decide if it's worth the cost of insurance or if you will take your chances. I've been lucky so far and most people I know don't insure bikes separately for crash/theft outside of their home. If you are worried about it being stolen from your house, your homeowners insurance should cover that without any problem and is really cheap.

If you do decide to insure your bike, make sure you add overseas coverage if you intend on travelling abroad . It is a nominal addition to cost and is not included by default.
  • Thanks for the feedback on the insurance.  I looked into Big Ring insurance but they do not insure in NY.

I will post anything else that I find
