2016 JOS Run Thread Wk14 - Movin' On and Taking Your Strength with You!

Well, we made it to the first Finish Line of the season!  You JOS peeps are AWESOME!  I am so happy to see the many successes over the past 3+ months.  Now it's time to tune into your events and bring all of your strength and power with you to your races!  It will be very exciting to see how the year unfolds for all of you, and I hope that we can continue a JOS thread for everyone to post what's happening in your tri-lives!

This week is testing week for the bike and a 10K or half-marathon on the weekend.  Not sure if I'll find a race to do, but I may just make up my own:-)  I'll be anxiously awaiting your results on both and wish you all the best of luck.  I am sure the many weeks of Run Durability has set you up for a successful season and I've truly enjoyed being your Run Captain:-)   Now let's go Kick Some Butt!!

Comments

  • Got today's short run in and that was plenty. Due to back issues, a poorly timed elimination diet I won't be "racing" aka testing at my half this Saturday. I will run it as well as I can with a plan of negative splitting the run, practicing nutrition and watching my cadence. Those are my goals.

You guys will have to crush your tests for me too! Good luck everyone!
  • I saw this today on FB. Thought it was pretty cool:
"I didn't want to do my run today... but I like to win.
Your desire to progress must exceed your desire to be stagnant.
Today I ran. To win in the distant future I will do my run workout today so I can achieve my goals months from now. Do the consistent work and you can achieve anything.... literally." The Iron Cowboy

I need to get moving again! :-)
  • @Carol, Thanks for being an awesome Run Captain!
Thanks everyone for the mojo to get my run on. My OS goal was to maintain my run fitness but I can see that my weekly avg pace have improved since Jan. Good luck to everyone testing or racing the next several days and with your race season!
  • Thanks for all your work. I'll be going on another week or two at this, but you've been great.

Wednesday, I knocked out another 10 miler...this time in some kind of nasty weather. 40ish and windy outside and it started to rain 15 minutes in...which I hadn't anticipated. But I slogged through. Still getting a little calf soreness afterwards...maybe my stride is just a little different after the achilles...but I feel like everything is going well.
  • @Carol, Thanks for leading us through a very long outseason.
Right hip much better, got in a good 7.7 mi. run.
  • Great running you all! I hope everyone racing today has an awesome time:-) I'm going for a short, easy run so that I can try to keep up with my daughter tomorrow. I can't believe the JOS is over (for most of us!). I'm going to keep a thread going next week so that I can follow all of you through your season!! Let us know how your weekend went!
  • First outta my gate is a big big "THANYOU" to the one and only Carol D for pushing us all forward for the last 14 weeks I curtsy(bow). This has been a long haul for all of us no doubt but that OS finish line is here. To all the gangster's who were regular contributer's TY they kept me motivated. I am not much of a writer but I did like to hear all about your success. Well last day, I am locked down in taper mode for next week. This is a first for me with unconventional trg for a marathon. Zero speedwork, zero hill trg, 14 weeks of rebuilding my fitness after my accident. So run, bike, core, and stretching it was. Have put in 72 runs just under 550 miles. A lot of those miles were slower than what my marathon pace will be by choice. I minimizied my chances of getting broken down with the cross trg and to keep motivated. Well it did work, healthy and time to play next week. Again TY Carol and to the OS crew , success to all for 2016.
  • To Carol-Thanks from me too on being an awesome JOS run captain-your weekly intros were priceless and the motivation from you and the rest of the regular contributors butt-kickin. I look forward to reading about everyone's successes in their 2016 race season. Carol, I think continuing a JOS 2016 report thread is a great idea!!!!!

I chose to do my own 5k test today. The weather cooperated! We've been touching 90 degrees this past week with that blazing desert sun. A front moved in friday and its actually cloudy with intermittent light sprinkles and in the 60s today image

I took the dogs on a 3.5 mile warmup at SLSP (the first S=STUPID) then went to my 5k course on my own (very accusingly sad looks from doggies).
    deep breath, go:
    8:08, 8:06, 8:04, .1@7:58 = 25:07/Vdot=38, Thats a 1 point increase from the 5k I did a few weeks ago. cadence 178 ( I use metronome set at 180 and really focus on that), avg HR 164.

Now, if I could just actually maintain this predicted LSP in my IM marathon I would be thrilled! I think its all about run durability in the months ahead
  • I have truly enjoyed this out season! On day 106 of run streak- some, like today, done at 0400 before a flight! I have no races scheduled due to a heavy travel schedule and a move... So what now? Well, I hate taking my Air Force PT test. But I reall hate taking it in December. It's cold. It's usually after running far and slow for months after training for a fall race. So... I'm biting the bullet and taking it 7 months early in May. That's right! Since I've been doing speed work, planks, and push ups, I'm already in great shape! So I'm going moving over to a get faster plan for a few weeks. Then I'll decide what's next.
Thanks to everyone for the motivation and to Carol for the great weekly intros.
  • Final run in the OS for me yesterday was a great one. You know, the kind...it felt really really good, so I even though I've not run much and thursdays little 90" TH intervals were tough I decided to do a Sunday 2x1 th run. First was great, then second was a touch faster and went for a third faster still. Ended up with 8 miles in 1:15 and a big smile. We ran at our local gym due to day 2 of SNOW and cold. It was fun to hit the bubble tub with my buddies and have a nice breakfast afterwards. I bailed on the half mary I was to run due to my back and being undertrained so I think since this shorter run felt so good I made a good choice. The extra 5 would not have been a good idea based on the legs this morning. image

Thank you so much Carol for all your leadership! I will definitely be posting on the next thread! image Happy Racing all!
  • Awwwwwww shucks... Thank you all for the very kind words! It's been a blast:-)

@ Derrek - Your times have been steadily improving since Jan. and now you can take that to the bank! Keep us posted!

@ William - so excited you got another 10-miler in! I got caught in a rainstorm the other day too... Ugh. Sounds like you are well on the road to recovery. Be patient :-)

@ Mark - Soooooo glad your hip is better! Keep an eye on that, but sounds like your running is just fine:-)

@ Steve - I'd really like to see you curtsy next time we are together:-) Tx! The very best to you at Boston. I am so amazed after all you went through in IMCHOO and your long road back and now you are going to kick some butt in Boston:-) I am trying to convince myself to be dedicated to the strength training like you did. I'm so glad how the training has gone for you!

@ Betsy - WOWZER! Congrats on the 5K and the Vdot bump:-) That's blazing fast! I agree about the run durability continuing. I'm with you on the dang IM run:-)

@ Leslie - Unbelievable CPR! 106 straight days of running?! Running at 4:00 a.m. before a flight?! You are the definition of CPR! Best of luck on your PT test! I'm sure you will ace that thing:-)

@ Trish - glad you went out of OS with a bang:-) That was an awesome run and I'm sure it did wonders for your head! Definitely a good choice.

I did a 10-mile run with my daughter and her friend who is running Boston this morning. It was so nice being with these young gals and hanging on:-) Just loaded up the HIM plan for Eagleman and it looks Hard! LOL.

I lost one of my dearest friends yesterday (she was 94-years young!) and it was good to run long and get my thoughts together. This week will be challenging with all that is going on, but I'll do my best.

So - signing off on the JOS Run Durability thread, but about to start a new one so we can keep up the mojo! I honestly NEED this to keep me going:-)

    THANKS ALL!

    xoxo
