Training in Orlando
Hi All!!
So I found out that my school district is going to send me to Orlando for a conference on creative learning! WOOHOO!! I am so excited to go- and I leave on Wednesday!! BUT need help with figure out what there is for training.....The hotel has a "tropical pool"- which I assume will not be good for laps I saw a picture of the fitness center and it has 1 treadmill. SO my question to anyone who has been to Orlando- Is there any safe places to run?? Or ride if I brought my bike?? Swim?? The hotel is across the street from Universal Studios.
THANKS!!!!

I thought of just finding a lake to jump into, but not sure I will be that adventurous.
+1 on Lucky's Lake Swim. I do that one often (might be there Friday) & highly recommend it. The website has tons of details, but it is literally across the street from the north side of Universal Studios. 500m crossing with buoys to guide you, most people do 1-2k but some are there longer. It starts at 6:30 am (later on Sat). Pull up to the gate close enough & it opens on its own, park in the yard, head down to the water and tell someone it's your first time and they'll take care of you (waiver, what to sight on, etc.).
Riding in that area isn't ideal, there's lots of traffic and few spots with uninterrupted stretches of road. If you really wanted to bring a bike and could drive I'd suggest heading out to Clermont area (~30 minutes away) or check with http://www.windermereroadies.com/ to see if they have any rides going on.
Running maybe around the outside perimeter of Universal property, especially the west side along Turkey Lake Rd, would give you long(er) stretches where you could go without stopping much. If you want something longer and more scenic 5 Mile Rd. in Clermont offers long stretches on clay roads with some hills (by FL standards).
I am going to try and run around universal tomorrow morning! On Saturday we wil head to cocoa beach for a few days and I AM bringing my bike and I'm gonna do the Ron jons sprint tri on Sunday!!
If anyone is around and wants to train let me know!!!
Thanks again for the info!!
I'm in Orlando for a few more days, but my daughter is in the hospital. I can't really commit to any training at this point.
Enjoy the OWS Friday, it sounds like fun!

You and your family!! Let us know if we can do anything to help!
@ Scott R- I hope you come to swim tomorrow- you said you've done it before....lake is safe right? No alligators gonna snatch me up??
The FAQ & waiver on Lucky's website makes it sound worse than it is. I've done a bunch of crossings without incident. Last time I was there was 2 weeks ago, water was low 70s. It'll be dark for the first lap, but not hard to sight off the light on the dock that is on the correct line. Turnout depends on the day & weather, but generally I'd guess 20-30 people on weekdays.
I am planning on being there. When you go past the house toward the water there's a small pagoda to the right where I'll toss my stuff (I'll have a shiny red EN water bottle ). There's a wooden boat house on the left just before the dock. There should be waivers on the ledge there and swim buoys inside (you're required to use one for first few crossings regardless of skill level). The link below shows a picture.
They start at 6:30, so I'd get there about 15 minutes early early to get situated. I'm picking up a friend on the way so as long as he's not late I'll be there early(ish).
